1.3.21

क्रीडोऽनुसम्परिभ्यश्च

Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī does not carry this rule. It stands in the Aṣṭādhyāyī at 1.3.21, and the abridgement is 1,269 of Pāṇini's 3,983 rules — so this is a place where the poem runs past the textbook.

after क्रीड् with अनु, सम्, परि — and आ — आत्मनेपद is used

The root क्रीड् "to play, to sport", when it follows the prefixes अनु, सम् or परि — and, by the च "and" of the rule, आ carried down from the rule before — takes the आत्मनेपद endings, the middle set, whatever pada it would take on its own. So a compounded "play together" conjugates in the middle voice: संक्रीडन्ते "they sport together". The derivation names the rule on the silent step where the middle set is chosen. This rule stands outside the Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī abridgement.

  • Siddhāntakaumudī — outside the Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī abridgement's 1,269 sūtras
