After णिच् — the causative sign — the आत्मनेपद endings (the middle set, the endings whose fruit turns back on the doer) are used when the fruit of the action accrues to the agent, कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, carried down from the rules before it. So a causative whose result is for its own doer conjugates in the middle voice. नर्तयेथाः "you would make dance" and लक्षयेथाः "you would make out", both causatives, take the आत्मनेपद ending by this rule. The derivation names it on the silent step where the middle set is chosen.
