6.4.38

वा ल्यपि

Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī does not carry this rule. It stands in the Aṣṭādhyāyī at 6.4.38, and the abridgement is 1,269 of Pāṇini's 3,983 rules — so this is a place where the poem runs past the textbook.

the penultimate nasal is dropped optionally before ल्यप्

The penultimate nasal that the preceding rule would drop is dropped only optionally (वा) before ल्यप् (the prefixed absolutive -य). तन् "to stretch" → optionally त before ल्यप्, and so वितत्य "having spread out". This rule stands outside the Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī abridgement.

  • Aṣṭādhyāyī — 6.4.38 वा ल्यपि
  • Siddhāntakaumudī — outside the Laghu-siddhāntakaumudī abridgement's 1,269 sūtras
