न ङिसम्बुद्ध्योः

the न् does not drop before the locative singular ङि or in the vocative singular

The stem-final न् that 8.2.7 drops from an -an or -in noun is kept in two places: before the locative-singular ending ङि, and in the सम्बुद्धि, the vocative singular. So where the nominative राजा has lost its न्, the vocative हे राजन् keeps it; and the in-stem कामचारिन्, whose nominative is कामचारी, keeps its न् when it is called on, हे कामचारिन्, “O you who go where you will.” The vocative and the locative are the two forms of an -an noun that still show the न् the other cases shed.
