उपसर्गादसमासेऽपि णोपदेशस्य
लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 457 · प्रकरण 12, which opens at लः कर्मणि च भावे चाकर्मकेभ्यः · rule 87 of 179 in it
after a preverb, the न् of a ण-taught root turns to ण्, even outside a compound
A root taught with an initial ण् (णोपदेश) had that ण् turned to plain न् for use; but when such a root stands after a preverb (upasarga), its न् turns back to the retroflex ण् — and this holds even when the preverb and root are not bound into a compound. So नम् "to bend", plain न् on its own, becomes ण- after परि: परि + नत → परिणताम् "bent down". The preverb's own र् or ष् is what tips the following न् to ण्, and the rule lets that reach across the seam a preverb leaves.
