द्वितीयाटौस्स्वेनः

लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 279 · प्रकरण 8, which opens at हो ढः · rule 30 of 108 in it

इदम् and एतद् become एन in the accusative, in टा, and in ओस्, on a second mention

On a second mention of something already named — the अन्वादेश, where a thing brought up to have one thing said of it is taken up again to have another said — इदम् 'this' and एतद् 'this here' are replaced by एन in three places: the accusative (द्वितीया), the instrumental singular ending टा, and the ending ओस् of the genitive-locative dual. So the accusative एतत् becomes एनद् (2.55) when the verse points a second time at what it has already shown, and इदम् likewise gives एनम्, एनौ, एनान्. Outside these three case-slots, and on a first mention, the pronoun keeps its ordinary इदम्/एतद् shapes.
