वच्, स्वप् and the यजादि roots take सम्प्रसारण before a कित् affix

वच् "to speak", स्वप् "to sleep", and the यजादि roots (यज् "to worship" and its group) undergo सम्प्रसारण — the change by which a root's semivowel य्, व् or र् is replaced by the matching vowel इ, उ or ऋ — before an affix marked with a silent क् (a कित् affix). वच् before the past participle क्त (a कित् affix) turns its व to उ: वच् + त → उच् + त → उक्त "spoken"; स्वप् likewise gives सुप्त "asleep". The कित् mark is what draws the vowel out; before an unmarked affix the semivowel stays, as वच् keeps it in वक्ति "he speaks".
