When the ending उस् follows — the third-plural उस् of the perfect and of some other tenses — and the vowel before it is not at the end of a word, the two vowels at the seam collapse into the later one alone: the earlier vowel is simply lost into the उस्. This is a पररूप, a single substitute that takes the shape of the following vowel. So the optative of अस् "to be", स् + या + उस्, loses the vowel of या to give स्युः "they would be"; and प्र + आ + उस् in प्रोषितानाम् "of those gone abroad" collapses to प्र + उस्.
