The joins of the stanza turn on the visarga. शरभाः loses its visarga before the voiced ल् of लङ्घयेयुः and is printed शरभा — the rule that an आः before a voiced sound drops to a bare आ. लङ्घयेयुः then meets the voiced भ् of भवन्तम् and its visarga goes to र्, लङ्घयेयुर्भवन्तम्; कुर्वीथाः meets the voiceless त् of तुमुल- and its visarga goes to स्, कुर्वीथास्तुमुल-. स्युः keeps its visarga before the voiceless प् of परिभवपदम्. The म् of मुक्ताध्वानम्, भवन्तम् and परिभवपदम् is held as अनुस्वार before a following consonant (Pāṇini 8.3.23), so मुक्ताध्वानं सपदि, भवन्तं and परिभवपदं निष्फल-.

  • ये प्रथमा · nominative — कर्ता, the agent

  • स्वाङ्गभङ्गाय चतुर्थी · dative — तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी — a dative of purpose in form that names the outcome in fact

The dative here has the shape of a purpose — the śarabhas leap ‘for the breaking of their own limbs’ — but nothing aims at breaking itself. Mallinātha draws the consequence: भवतोऽतिदूरत्वात् स्वाङ्गभङ्गव्यतिरिक्तं फलं नास्ति लङ्घनस्य, ‘you being far too high, the leap has no fruit apart from the breaking of their own limbs.’ What the animals aim at is the cloud; what the case names is what they will actually get. So the fourth case marks the end they come to, not the end they intend.

    with निष्फलारम्भयत्नाः

  • परिभवपदम् प्रथमा · nominative — प्रथमा, predicate — a nominative, not the accusative the ending looks like

A neuter shows the first and second cases alike, and परिभवपदम् sits next to the accusatives of the stanza, so DCS reads it as an object. But it is what स्युः predicates: के … परिभवपदं न स्युः, ‘who would not be a thing to be slighted.’ Mallinātha construes it as a predicate by glossing the verb न स्युः with न भवन्ति, ‘would not be’ — a copular ‘be’, whose complement stands in the first case. A neuter singular predicate to a masculine plural subject is ordinary Sanskrit where the predicate is an abstract ‘a place for’ rather than a thing counted.

संरम्भोत्पतनरभसाः

संरम्भ · उत्पतन · रभस

  1. उत्पतने रभसः

तत्पुरुष (locative) — the impetus that is in the leap

  2. संरम्भेण उत्पतनरभसः येषां ते

बहुव्रीहि — the beasts whose impetus in leaping comes of fury

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to शरभाः. whose rush in the leap is fury's — Mallinātha glosses all three members before he joins them, and names an authority for two of them. संरम्भ he takes as कोप, anger, and quotes the Śabdārṇava for the word's range: संरम्भः सङ्क्रमे कोपे, 'saṃrambha is used of an onset and of anger' — so the word could have been the rush itself, and he chooses the anger, which leaves the rush to रभस. उत्पतन he glosses उत्प्लवन, springing upward. रभस he glosses वेग, speed, and quotes the Amarakośa: रभसो वेगहर्षयोः, 'rabhas is used of speed and of delight'. **The shape of the compound is the same oddity as the stanza before.** His own paraphrase reads तेन उत्पतने रभसो येषां ते — संरम्भ in the instrumental, उत्पतन in the locative, रभस in the nominative — so the members stand in three cases where an ordinary bahuvrīhi (Pāṇini 2.2.24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे) has them agreeing. That is a व्यधिकरणबहुव्रीहि, the second in two verses after सरलस्कन्धसङ्घट्टजन्मा at 1.55. There he stopped to defend it; here he lets it pass without a word

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who glosses each member and quotes the Śabdārṇava for संरम्भ and the Amarakośa for रभस; Pāṇini 2.2.24 by way of skt-mcp. The Amara line is printed `ramaso` in `vendor/meghaduta-sanjivini.itx` and is restored to `रभसो`, which is the word being glossed“tasminhimādrau saṃrambhaḥ kopaḥ || “saṃrambhaḥ saṅkrame kope” iti śabdārṇave || tenotpatana utplavane rabhaso vego yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ || “ramaso vegaharṣayoḥ” ityamaraḥ”

स्वाङ्गभङ्गाय

स्व · अङ्ग · भङ्ग

  1. स्वानि अङ्गानि

    कर्मधारय — their own limbs

  2. स्वाङ्गानां भङ्गः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the breaking of them

तत्पुरुष. for the breaking of their own limbs — Mallinātha carries the compound over unglossed, which is what he does when nothing in it is in doubt, and then puts it to work in the sentence that explains the stanza: भवतोऽतिदूरत्वात् स्वाङ्गभङ्गव्यतिरिक्तं फलं नास्ति लङ्घनस्य, 'you being far too high, the leap has no fruit apart from the breaking of their own limbs'. The dative is one of purpose in form and of outcome in fact. What the animals aim at is the cloud; what the case names is what they will get

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who carries the compound over unglossed and then draws the consequence. `vendor/meghaduta-sanjivini.itx` prints `svāṅgabhaṅgāviriktaṃ` where the word has to be `स्वाङ्गभङ्गव्यतिरिक्तं`, 'other than the breaking of their own limbs', which is what the sentence requires; the letters are read through“bhavato'tidūratvātsvāṅgabhaṅgāviriktaṃ phalaṃ nāsti laṅghanasyetyarthaḥ”

मुक्ताध्वानम्

मुक्त · अध्वन्

  1. मुक्तः अध्वा येन सः

बहुव्रीहि — the one who has left the road behind

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to भवन्तम्. past whose road they cannot come — and the compound says nothing until Mallinātha says which road. His vigraha is मुक्तोऽध्वा शरभोत्प्लवनमार्गो येन तं भवन्तम्: the अध्वन् is not the cloud's own route north but शरभोत्प्लवनमार्ग, 'the range of a śarabha's spring'. So मुक्त is not 'released' but 'already left behind', and the whole word means the cloud is flying above the height they can reach. That is what makes the leap the fruitless undertaking the last pāda then generalises about, and the compound is where the stanza's argument is actually made

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose vigraha supplies the one word — शरभोत्प्लवनमार्ग — that decides what अध्वन् means here. `vendor/meghaduta-sanjivini.itx` prints `mārgoṃ` for `मार्गो`; the stray anusvāra is read through“mukto'dhvā śarabhotplavanamārgoṃ yena taṃ bhavantaṃ sapadi svāṅgabhaṅgāya laṅghayeyuḥ”

तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातावकीर्णान्

तुमुल · करका · वृष्टि · पात · अवकीर्ण

  1. तुमुलाः करकाः

    कर्मधारय — hail coming thick

  2. तुमुलकरकाणां वृष्टिः

    तत्पुरुष (genitive) — a downpour of it

  3. तुमुलकरकावृष्टेः पातः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the coming down of that downpour

  4. तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातेन अवकीर्णाः

तत्पुरुष (instrumental) — scattered by it

तत्पुरुष — it agrees with तान्. scattered by the fall of a thick hailstorm — Mallinātha builds it a member at a time: तुमुलाः is सङ्कुलाः, crowded; करकाः is वर्षोपलाः, rain-stones, on Amara's authority — वर्षोपलस्तु करका; तासां वृष्टिः, a rain of them; तस्याः पातेन अवकीर्णान् विक्षिप्तान्, flung apart by its fall. **Then he spends the whole close of the stanza on the gender of one member, because the split of the compound turns on it.** Some read करकाणाम् आवृष्टिः instead — करक masculine, and आवृष्टि for the shower — on the strength of Yādava's घनोपलस्तु करके, and Mallinātha reports that others will not have it: तदन्ये नानुमन्यन्ते. His case is that करक is of both genders, and he calls four witnesses for it. Kṣīrasvāmin, glossing Amara's very line वर्षोपलस्तु करका, goes on in the section on words of many meanings to give करकः masculine for a water-pot, for the Buddha and for Vināyaka — कमण्डलौ च करकः सुगते च विनायके — and by giving it there he shows the word has both. Yādava's line, he says, is meant to license the masculine and not to forbid the feminine, so there is no conflict with Amara. The Viśvaprakāśa prints both outright: करकस्तु करङ्के स्याद् दाडिमे च कमण्डलौ । पक्षिभेदे करे चापि करका च घनोपले. And Rudra says the same in one line: वर्षोपलस्तु करका करकोऽपि च दृश्यते. His conclusion is that the quarrel was never there — न कुत्रापि विरोधवार्ता

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who glosses every member on Amara's authority and then defends the feminine करका against the rival split with Kṣīrasvāmin, Yādava, the Viśvaprakāśa and Rudra. `vendor/meghaduta-sanjivini.itx` runs words together in that stretch — `varṣo palastu` and `ghano palastu` for `वर्षोपलस्तु` and `घनोपलस्तु`, `kṣarisvāminā` for `क्षीरस्वामिना`, `viśvaprakā śavacane` for `विश्वप्रकाशवचने` — and all four are restored from the citations they name“tān śarabhāṃstumulāḥ saṅkulāḥ karakā varṣopalāḥ || “varṣo palastu karakā” ityamaraḥ || tāsāṃ vṛṣṭistasyāḥ pātenāvakīrṇānvikṣiptānkurvīthāḥ … yadatra “ghano palastu karake” iti yādavavacanātkarakaśabdasya niyatapuṃliṅgatābhiprāyeṇa “karakāṇāmāvṛṣṭiḥ” iti keṣāñcidvyākhyānaṃ tadanye nānumanyante … “karakastu karaṅke syāddāḍime ca kamaṇḍalau | pakṣibhede kare cāpi karakā ca ghanopale” iti viśvaprakā śavacane tūbhayaliṅgatā vyaktaiveti na kutrāpi virodhavārtā”

परिभवपदम्

परिभव · पद

  1. परिभवस्य पदम्

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — a place where contempt settles

तत्पुरुष. a thing to be slighted — glossed with a compound of the same shape, तिरस्कारपदम्. पद at the end of a compound is neither a foot nor a word but a standing-place, the spot a thing comes to rest on, so the phrase says that contempt has somewhere to land rather than that someone is despised

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who glosses the compound with तिरस्कारपदम्“ke vā paribhavapadaṃ tiraskārapadaṃ na syuḥ”

निष्फलारम्भयत्नाः

निष्फल · आरम्भ · यत्न

  1. आरम्भेषु यत्नः

तत्पुरुष (locative) — the effort spent on what is undertaken

  2. निष्फलः आरम्भयत्नः येषां ते

बहुव्रीहि — those whose effort on it bears nothing

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to के. whose effort on what they undertake comes to nothing — and Mallinātha's vigraha decides the one thing the compound leaves open, which is what निष्फल goes with. He puts it with यत्न and not with आरम्भ: आरभ्यन्त इत्यारम्भाः कर्माणि, 'things begun, that is, actions'; तेषु यत्न उद्योगः, 'effort on them is exertion'; स निष्फलो येषां ते, 'those whose that is fruitless'. So the undertakings themselves are real and it is the labour spent on them that yields nothing — which is exactly the śarabhas' case, and why the maxim fits them. He closes निष्कर्मोपक्रमा इत्यर्थः, their setting-out ends in no deed done

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose vigraha attaches निष्फल to यत्न and who derives आरम्भ before glossing it. `vendor/meghaduta-sanjivini.itx` prints the pratīka as `niṣphalāyambharatnāḥ`, `Arambhanta` for `ārabhyanta` and `niṣpalo` for `niṣphalo`; all three are read through against the words being glossed“ārambhanta ityārambhāḥ karmāṇi teṣu yatna udyogaḥ sa niṣpalo yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ | niṣkarmopakramā ityarthaḥ”

  • pronoun, प्रथमा बहुवचन nominative plural

    ये

    यद्

who — the relative that opens the stanza, and Mallinātha's pratīka for the whole block is य इति, 'the one beginning ye'. It is answered by तान् at the head of the third pāda, so the clause is held open across two whole pādas before the correlative arrives

ये and के are both nominative plurals of pronominal a-stems — ये from the relative यद्, के from the interrogative किम् — and they end not in the -आः an ordinary a-stem would take (as in शरभाः or रभसाः) but in a plain -ए. This is the pronominal ending: after a सर्वनाम, a pronoun, the nominative-plural affix जस् (that is, अस्) is replaced by शी, which is ई (Pāṇini 7.1.17 जसः शी), and अ + ई gives ए. So यद् + जस् becomes ये and किम् + जस् becomes के, the same ई that makes ते, सर्वे, अन्ये. It is why the relative and its answer are heard as ये … के across the stanza and never as the noun-like शरभाः.

    • Aṣṭādhyāyī — 7.1.17 जसः शी
    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.56: ya iti
  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा बहुवचन nominative plural

    संरम्भोत्पतनरभसाः

    रभस

rush, impetus — glossed वेग, speed. The word ends a bahuvrīhi describing शरभाः and takes their case and number. Amara gives it two senses at once, रभसो वेगहर्षयोः, speed and delight, and the animal of this stanza has both: it is the joy of the thing that makes it leap at a cloud

संरम्भोत्पतनरभसाः, ‘whose rush in leaping comes of fury’, is a bahuvrīhi of an odd shape, and Mallinātha glosses each of its three members from a lexicon before he joins them. संरम्भ he takes as कोप, anger, and quotes the Śabdārṇava for its range, संरम्भः सङ्क्रमे कोपे, ‘saṃrambha is used of an onset and of anger’; उत्पतन he glosses उत्प्लवन, springing upward; रभस he glosses वेग, speed, and quotes the Amarakośa, रभसो वेगहर्षयोः, ‘rabhas is used of speed and of delight’. His own paraphrase then sets them in three different cases — तेन उत्पतने रभसो येषां ते — which is what makes it a व्यधिकरणबहुव्रीहि, a possessive compound whose members do not agree. The animal has both of रभस's senses at once: it is the joy of the thing that makes it leap at a cloud.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.56: saṃrambhaḥ kopaḥ … tenotpatana utplavane rabhaso vego yeṣāṃ te; “rabhaso vegaharṣayoḥ” ityamaraḥ
  • a-stem masculine, चतुर्थी एकवचन dative singular

    स्वाङ्गभङ्गाय

    भङ्ग

for the breaking — the dative of purpose, which in this stanza is a dative of what will actually happen. भङ्ग is from √भञ्ज्, to break, and the noun is what breaks rather than the breaking of it only when a compound puts something before it, as here

  • pronoun, सप्तमी एकवचन locative singular

    तस्मिन्

    तद्

on it — Mallinātha names what it stands for at once, तस्मिन् हिमाद्रौ, on that Himālaya. The locative reaches back into the stanza before, whose wildfire was on the same slope, so two consecutive verses are about two things that can go wrong on one mountain

  • an-stem masculine, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    मुक्ताध्वानम्

    printed मुक्ताध्वानं

    अध्वन्

road — and the road is a particular one, शरभोत्प्लवनमार्गः, the reach of the animals' leap. The accusative singular is a strong case, अध्वानम्, where the न् survives and the vowel before it lengthens; the same word stood in the same case in Mallinātha's gloss at 1.47, कियन्तमध्वानम्

  • अव्यय

    सपदि

    सपदि

at once — an indeclinable built out of स and पद, 'with a foot down', which is to say within a single step. Mallinātha carries it over without a gloss. The alternative reading of these two pādas that `text.md` prints below the verse has दर्पोत्सेकात्, 'out of a swelling of pride', standing where this word stands: the printed text gives the speed of the leap and the variant gives its motive

  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा बहुवचन nominative plural

    शरभाः

    printed शरभा

    शरभ

the śarabhas — Mallinātha calls them अष्टापद मृगविशेषाः, 'a particular beast, the eight-legged one', and quotes the Viśva for how far the word reaches: शरभः शलभे चाष्टापदे प्रोक्तो मृगान्तरे, 'śarabha is said of a locust, of the eight-legged one, and of another animal'. He picks the middle sense, and the stanza needs it: a locust could not break itself against the sky

  • √लङ्घ्, class 10, विधिलिङ्, parasmaipada, third person plural

    लङ्घयेयुः

    printed लङ्घयेयुर्भवन्तम्

    √लङ्घ्, on the stem लङ्घय्

should they leap over — and Mallinātha stops to say what kind of optative it is: सम्भावनायां लिङ्, the लिङ् of supposition, which Pāṇini gives at 3.3.154 सम्भावनेऽलमिति चेत् सिद्धाप्रयोगे. It is neither an order nor a wish but the speaker entertaining a possibility — 'suppose they do leap'. One pāda later the same ending appears again in कुर्वीथाः and he names that one differently, विध्यर्थे लिङ्, so a single stanza carries the one लिङ् in two senses and only the commentary tells them apart. The alternative reading `text.md` prints below the verse has the plain future लङ्घयिष्यन्ति here, which turns the supposition into a prediction and loses the distinction altogether. The stem is लङ्घय्; whether that is the tenth class or a causative built on the first is not settled by the form, which is the same either way, and Mallinātha does not say

लङ्घयेयुः, कुर्वीथाः and स्युः are all optatives, all the mood विधिलिङ्, and Mallinātha reads the one ending in three ways. लङ्घयेयुः he calls सम्भावनायां लिङ्, the optative of supposition (Pāṇini 3.3.154) — ‘suppose the śarabhas do leap at you’, neither an order nor a wish but a possibility entertained. कुर्वीथाः, one pāda on, he calls विध्यर्थे लिङ्, the optative of injunction (3.3.161), and glosses it with the imperative कुरुष्व — here the cloud is actually told to act, ‘make them scattered’. स्युः he leaves unnamed, glossing it with the flat present भवन्ति, because an optative inside a rhetorical question supposes nothing and enjoins nothing. So a single stanza carries the one लिङ् in three jobs, and only the commentary tells them apart.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.56: laṅghayeyuḥ sambhāvanāyāṃ liṅ … kurvīthāḥ kuruṣva vidhyarthe liṅ
  • at-stem masculine, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    भवन्तम्

    printed लङ्घयेयुर्भवन्तम्

    भवत्

you — the polite word, which declines as an at-stem. Mallinātha writes it into his paraphrase with a correlative in front, तं भवन्तम्, tying the accusative that ends the second pāda to मुक्ताध्वानम् before it and making both the object of लङ्घयेयुः

  • pronoun, द्वितीया बहुवचन accusative plural

    तान्

    तद्

them — the correlative that answers the ये of the first word, and Mallinātha supplies the noun under it, तान् शरभान्. Two whole pādas stand between the relative and its answer, which is why he writes the noun back in

  • √कृ, class 8, विधिलिङ्, atmanepada, second person singular

    कुर्वीथाः

    printed कुर्वीथास्तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातावकीर्णान्

    √कृ

make them — glossed with the imperative कुरुष्व, which is middle as this form is. It is the second optative of the stanza and the second kind of optative: विध्यर्थे लिङ्, the लिङ् of injunction, Pāṇini 3.3.161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्. So the cloud is told to act, where the śarabhas were only supposed to leap — one ending, one stanza, two jobs, and Mallinātha names both in the space of two lines

  • √कॄ + क्त, द्वितीया बहुवचन accusative plural

    तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातावकीर्णान्

    printed कुर्वीथास्तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातावकीर्णान्

    अवकीर्ण, from अव + √कॄ

scattered — glossed विक्षिप्तान्, flung apart. The root is √कॄ, to scatter, whose past participle is कीर्ण. DCS gives the lemma as अवकृ, which is the other root: √कृ, to do, would make अवकृत. Nothing in the printed form separates them — the two roots differ by the length of one vowel that the participle does not show — and only the sense decides, which is why Mallinātha's one-word gloss settles it

  • pronoun, प्रथमा बहुवचन nominative plural

    के

    किम्

who — the rhetorical question that closes the stanza, and Mallinātha answers it in the same breath: सर्व एव भवन्तीत्यर्थः, 'meaning, every one of them is'. A question with न in it has its answer turned inside out, so 'who would not be' comes to 'all are'. It is the second such question in the canto after the कः of 1.43, where the answer he supplied was the opposite one, न कोऽपि, nobody

  • अव्यय

    वा

    वा

then — not the ordinary 'or' here but the particle that leans on a question, the way English adds 'after all'. Mallinātha keeps it where it stands, अतः के वा, and adds his own अतः in front of it, so the question follows from what came before rather than opening something new

  • अव्यय

    न

    न

not — Mallinātha glosses it by repeating it, न स्युर् न भवन्ति. It is the smallest word in the pāda and the one the whole maxim turns on: without it the question would have the answer 'nobody', and with it the answer is 'everybody'

  • √अस्, class 2, विधिलिङ्, parasmaipada, third person plural

    स्युः

    √अस्

would be — the third optative of the stanza, and the only one Mallinātha does not name a sense for. He glosses it with the flat present भवन्ति, which is what an optative in a rhetorical question comes to: nothing is being supposed and nothing enjoined, and the mood is there because the question is not about anyone in particular. √अस् has no middle at all, so the ending could only be this one

  • a-stem neuter, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    परिभवपदम्

    printed परिभवपदं

    पद

a thing to be slighted — glossed तिरस्कारपदम्. It is what स्युः predicates, so the case is the first and not the second; a neuter shows both alike and nothing on the page decides it, which is why DCS reads an accusative here. The verb decides it. A neuter singular standing as predicate to a masculine plural subject is ordinary Sanskrit where the predicate is an abstract 'a place for' rather than a thing counted

  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा बहुवचन nominative plural

    निष्फलारम्भयत्नाः

    यत्न

effort — glossed उद्योग, exertion. The word ends the stanza, and the compound it ends is a bahuvrīhi describing के, so the last thing the verse says is which sort of people the question was about. यत्न is from √यत्, to strive, and names the trying rather than the doing, which is the point of the maxim

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose commentary is written as anvaya: he takes the locative first, holds the relative clause together across both its pādas, and puts the maxim's own subject before the question that asks it“tasminhimādrau … ye śarabhā … tenotpatana utplavane rabhaso vego yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ || mukto'dhvā … yena taṃ bhavantaṃ sapadi svāṅgabhaṅgāya laṅghayeyuḥ || … tān śarabhāṃs … pātenāvakīrṇānvikṣiptānkurvīthāḥ … sa niṣpalo yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ … ataḥ ke vā paribhavapadaṃ … na syurna bhavanti”

the dependency structure

कुर्वीथाः · क्रिया — make them; glossed with the middle imperative कुरुष्व, the विध्यर्थे लिङ् in which the cloud is actually told to act

तान् · कर्म — them; the correlative that answers the ये of the first pāda, Mallinātha supplying the noun तान् शरभान्

तुमुलकरकावृष्टिपातावकीर्णान् · agreeing with तान् — scattered by the fall of a thick hailstorm, विक्षिप्तान्

लङ्घयेयुः · क्रिया of the relative clause — should they leap; the सम्भावनायां लिङ्, the optative of mere supposition

ये · कर्ता — who; the relative that opens the stanza and is held across two pādas until तान् answers it

शरभाः · in apposition with ये — the śarabhas, अष्टापद मृगविशेषाः, the eight-legged beast

संरम्भोत्पतनरभसाः · बहुव्रीहि agreeing with शरभाः — whose rush in the leap comes of fury

भवन्तम् · कर्म of लङ्घयेयुः — you; the polite word, with तं भवन्तम् in Mallinātha's paraphrase

मुक्ताध्वानम् · agreeing with भवन्तम् — past whose road they cannot come, शरभोत्प्लवनमार्गो मुक्तो येन तम्

तस्मिन् · अधिकरण — on that mountain, तस्मिन् हिमाद्रौ, the same slope as the stanza before

सपदि · क्रियाविशेषण — at once, within a single step; an indeclinable Mallinātha carries over unglossed

स्वाङ्गभङ्गाय · तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी — for the breaking of their own limbs; a dative of purpose that names the outcome

स्युः · क्रिया of the maxim — would be; the optative of a rhetorical question, glossed flatly भवन्ति

के · कर्ता — who; the rhetorical question that closes the stanza, answered सर्व एव, ‘every one’

निष्फलारम्भयत्नाः · बहुव्रीहि agreeing with के — whose effort on what they undertake comes to nothing, निष्कर्मोपक्रमाः

परिभवपदम् · प्रथमा, predicate — a thing to be slighted, तिरस्कारपदम्; a place where contempt settles

वा · — the particle that leans on a question, अतः के वा, ‘who then, after all’

न · negation — the word the maxim turns on; न स्युः, ‘would not be’, glossed न भवन्ति

uncheckedMallinātha’s Sañjīvinī for the anvaya and the reading; the Telugu drawn from Vedam Venkataraya Sastri’s Āndhra Meghasandeśam and the Bālānandinī

Those śarabhas on that mountain, whose rush in the leap comes of their fury — should they spring at you all at once and break their own limbs doing it, you being already past the reach of a śarabha's leap — make them scatter under the fall of a thick hailstorm. For who would not be a thing to be slighted, whose effort on what they undertake bears nothing? Mallinātha turns the last pāda into the rule it is: क्षुद्रोऽप्यधिक्षिपन् प्रतिपक्षः सद्यः प्रतिक्षेप्तव्यः — an adversary who insults you is to be thrown back at once, however small he is.

uncheckedthe reader's reading, following Mallinātha's gloss; the closing maxim is his“kṣudro'pyadhikṣipanpratipakṣaḥ sadyaḥ pratikṣeptavya iti bhāvaḥ”
