An अ-stem’s final अ lengthens before a case-ending that begins with a यञ् consonant (य् व् र् ल् and the nasals). रामाभ्याम्, and with the dative य it makes रामाय. It is the lengthening behind the many -आ- forms of an a-stem’s oblique cases.
