And if Gaurī should go walking on that pleasure-mountain on her own two feet, her hand in Śambhu's, who has taken his snake-bracelet off for it — then go on ahead, hold the flood inside you still, build yourself a body of tread after tread, and be the stair up the jewelled slope. Mallinātha supplies the one thing that makes the first pāda a scene rather than a list: गौर्या भीरुत्वात्, because Gaurī is timid. That is why the bracelet comes off — it is a live snake, and she will not take a hand with a snake on it. And two of the stanza's compounds turn out to be instructions rather than descriptions. स्तम्भित is glossed घनीभावं प्रापित, brought to thickness: a cloud that a goddess is to walk on must freeze the water in it first. भङ्गीभक्ति is not devotion but an arrangement of bends, भङ्गीनां पर्वणां रचनया — the treads of the stair, laid out one above another. What is being asked for is a piece of engineering.
uncheckedthe reader's reading, following Mallinātha's gloss; the reason for the bracelet and the reading of स्तम्भित and भङ्गीभक्ति are his“gauryā bhīrutvāt … stambhito ghanībhāvaṃ prāpito … bhaṅgīnāṃ parvaṇāṃ bhaktyā racanayā”
On that pleasure-hill, if Gaurī, given a hand by Śambhu, should lay aside her snake-bracelet and wander on foot — then you, going ahead, the flood of your inner water stilled and your body folded into tiers, make yourself a stairway for her climbing of the jewelled slope.
