the अ of कृ's उ-stem becomes उ before a weak sārvadhātuka ending

The अ of कृ's present stem — the कर् or करो that the उ-marker builds — is replaced by उ before a sārvadhātuka ending marked with a silent क् or ङ् (a weak ending, one that does not strengthen the root). So the strong करोति keeps कर्, but the weak endings pull it to कुर्: कर् + उ + हि → कुर् + उ → कुरु "do!", and कुर्वन्ति "they do". The rule is what splits कृ's present into its करो and कुरु halves.
