Two joins voice a word-final त् before a following sound (Pāṇini 8.2.39): त्वं चेदच्छस्फटिकविशदं, where चेत् meets the अ of अच्छ- and the त् goes to द्, and स्यादस्थानोपगत-, where स्यात् meets the अ of अस्थान- and does the same. तर्कयेस्तिर्यगम्भः packs three words: तर्कयेः + तिर्यक् turns the visarga to स् before the त् (8.3.34), and तिर्यक् + अम्भः voices the final क् to ग् before the vowel, तिर्यगम्भः. छाययासौ is छायया + असौ, where the आ swallows the following अ, marked in print by the avagraha, च्छाययाऽसौ. In the last pāda अस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमा + इव gives सङ्गमेव (आ + इ → ए) and इव + अभिरामा gives इवाभिरामा (अ + अ → आ). The rest is म् held as अनुस्वार before a consonant — त्वं चेत्, विशदं तर्कयेः, पातुं सुरगज.

  • तस्याः षष्ठी · genitive — सम्बन्ध, a relation to another word

  • सुरगजः प्रथमा · nominative — उपमाने प्रथमा — the standard of comparison in the nominative, taking the case of what it is likened to

सुरगजः is a nominative that is not itself the subject of any verb. It is the उपमान, the thing the cloud is compared to, and इव sets the standard of comparison in the same case as the उपमेय, the thing compared — here त्वम्, which is nominative. So the elephant stands in the first case only because the cloud does. Mallinātha reads it as an indefinite one of the compass-elephants, कश्चिद्दिग्गजः, ‘some elephant of the quarters,’ so the comparison is not to a tame beast at a river but to a creature the size of a direction.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.53: suragaja iva kaściddiggaja iva

    with पूर्वार्धलम्बी

  • तिर्यक् द्वितीया · accusative — क्रियाविशेषणे द्वितीया — an accusative doing an adverb’s work, not a second object

तिर्यक् is the neuter accusative of तिर्यञ्च्, and on its face an accusative looks like the thing acted on. Here it names no object of the drinking; it says how the drinking is done. Mallinātha spells the construction out, तिरश्चीनं यथा तथा, ‘in such a way as to be crosswise’: the elephant does not put its mouth straight down but takes the water aslant. So the second case here is adverbial — an accusative used to qualify the action — and it is what leaves the reflection lying along the current rather than standing straight under the cloud.

सुरगजः

सुर · गज

  1. सुराणां गजः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the elephant of the gods

तत्पुरुष. an elephant of the gods — and Mallinātha names which kind: कश्चिद्दिग्गजः, 'some elephant of the quarters'. Those are the four (or eight) elephants that stand at the points of the compass holding the world up, so the comparison is not to a tame beast at a river but to a creature the size of a direction. His कश्चित् is doing the work of an English 'one of the': the verse says सुरगजः with no article and no number, and he reads it as any one of them

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who identifies the elephant“suragaja iva kaściddiggaja iva”

पूर्वार्धलम्बी

पूर्व · अर्ध · लम्बिन्

  1. पूर्वम् अर्धम्

    कर्मधारय — the front half

  2. पूर्वार्धेन लम्बते इति

तत्पुरुष (instrumental) — one who leans down by that front half

तत्पुरुष — it agrees with त्वम्. leaning down by its forequarters — the picture is an elephant with its front half tipped toward the water and its hind half still up in the air. पूर्वार्धम् is a compound Pāṇini writes a rule for: 2.2.1 पूर्वापराधरोत्तरमेकदेशिनैकाधिकरणे puts पूर्व, अपर, अधर and उत्तर together with the word for the whole they are a part of. The last member is लम्बिन्, an agent noun in णिनि by 3.2.78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये, which makes such a noun after a case-form standing in front of it — the same suffix that made भावि at 1.43 and प्रापि at 1.46. **Mallinātha reads पश्चार्धलम्बी here, not पूर्वार्धलम्बी**, and spends four clauses on it: पश्चादर्धं पश्चार्धम्, glossed पश्चिमार्धम्, 'the hind half', which he declares sound by पृषोदरादित्वात् — Pāṇini 6.3.109 पृषोदरादीनि यथोपदिष्टम्, the rule that lets a word whose letters have been dropped or altered outside any stated rule stand as correct because the learned use it. He needs that licence because पश्चात् is an indeclinable and is not one of the four words 2.2.1 names, so पश्चार्ध cannot be made the regular way and पूर्वार्ध can. Both readings draw the same elephant: his gloss of his own reading is पश्चार्धभागेन व्योम्नि स्थित्वा पूर्वार्धेन जलोन्मुखः, 'standing in the sky by its hind part, its front part turned toward the water'

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, on the reading पश्चार्धलम्बी; Pāṇini 2.2.1, 3.2.78 and 6.3.109 by way of skt-mcp; the analysis of पूर्वार्धलम्बी, which is what this text prints, is the reader's“paścādardhaṃ paścārdham | paścimārdhamityarthaḥ || pṛṣodarāditvātsādhuḥ || tena lambata iti paścārdhalambī san paścārdhabhāgena vyomni sthitvā | pūrvārdhena jalonmukha ityarthaḥ”

अच्छस्फटिकविशदम्

अच्छ · स्फटिक · विशद

  1. अच्छः स्फटिकः

    कर्मधारय — flawless crystal

  2. अच्छस्फटिकः इव विशदम्

कर्मधारय — bright as flawless crystal is

कर्मधारय — it agrees with अम्भः. bright as flawless crystal — Mallinātha replaces it word for word, निर्मलस्फटिकावदातम्: अच्छ is निर्मल, unclouded, and विशद is अवदात, clear-bright. A comparison folded into a compound: the thing compared to (crystal) stands with the quality the two share (brightness), which is Pāṇini 2.1.55 उपमानानि सामान्यवचनैः, and the इव has to be put back when the compound is undone. The verse says इव twice out loud in this stanza and once more here, silently

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose gloss keeps the members in order; Pāṇini 2.1.55 by way of skt-mcp“accha sphaṭikaviśadaṃ nirmalasphaṭikāvadātam”

अस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमा

अस्थान · उपगत · यमुना · सङ्गम

  1. न स्थानम् अस्थानम्

तत्पुरुष — not the place — the wrong place

  2. अस्थाने उपगतः

तत्पुरुष (locative) — come to it somewhere it should not be

  3. यमुनायाः सङ्गमः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the meeting with the Yamunā

  4. अस्थानोपगतः यमुनासङ्गमः

कर्मधारय — that meeting, arrived at out of place

  5. अस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमः यया सा

बहुव्रीहि — she who has got it

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to असौ. she to whom a meeting with the Yamunā has come in the wrong place — and Mallinātha says what the wrong place is: प्रयागाद् अन्यत्र, 'anywhere but Prayāga'. The Gaṅgā and the Yamunā meet at one spot on the map and nowhere else, so a dark stream entering the bright one two hundred miles upstream is not a new confluence but the old one in the wrong county. The whole four-member compound is a bahuvrīhi describing the river: not a confluence, but a river that has one. That is the difference between describing the water and describing what the water looks like it has

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who unpacks the compound and names the place“asau gaṅgā asthāne prayāgādanyatropagataḥ prāpto yamunāsaṅgamo yayā sā tathābhūteva”

  • pronoun, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    तस्याः

    तद्

her — Mallinātha names her, तस्या गङ्गायाः. The genitive belongs to अम्भः: it is her water that is to be drunk. The stanza before ended on the Gaṅgā and this one opens with a pronoun for her, so the two are one sentence's worth of river

  • √पा + तुमुन्

    पातुम्

    printed पातुं

    पातुम्, from √पा

to drink — an infinitive standing as the object of तर्कयेः: what the cloud is to consider is the drinking. √पा has been in the poem twice already and passive both times, as पीयमानः at 1.16, where the cloud was drunk by the villagers' eyes, and at 1.44, where the wind was drunk by elephants. This is the first place the cloud does the drinking itself

  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    सुरगजः

    printed सुरगज

    गज

an elephant of the gods — nominative because it is what the cloud is being likened to, and इव takes the same case as the thing it compares. The elephant is the poem's standing figure for a cloud: it was one at 1.2, where a cloud on the peak looked like a bull elephant butting a bank, and this stanza turns the picture round and has the cloud stoop to drink like one

  • अव्यय

    इव

    इव

like — and Mallinātha names no figure on it, here or on the second इव in the last pāda. One stanza earlier he named उत्प्रेक्षा on a single इव and gave its ground in a word. Two इव in one stanza and silence on both is his position at work rather than an oversight: this one compares a cloud to an elephant, which is a likeness and not a fancy

  • an-stem neuter, सप्तमी एकवचन locative singular

    व्योम्नि

    व्योमन्

in the sky — the locative of where the elephant hangs. व्योमन् is the sky as an expanse rather than as a place gods live, and it is the word that made व्योमगङ्गा at 1.45, the Gaṅgā that runs in the sky. Two stanzas apart the poem has both Gaṅgās: the one overhead and the one on the ground the cloud is now above

व्योम्नि, “in the sky,” is the locative singular of व्योमन्, an अन्-stem neuter, and it teaches an option in the declension. The penultimate अ of the -मन् is elided before the locative ending इ (ङि), so व्योमन् + इ becomes व्योम्नि with the न् now conjunct. The elision is not forced but allowed: Pāṇini 6.4.136 विभाषा ङिश्योः makes it optional (विभाषा) before the locative ending ङि and the dual endings शि, so both व्योमनि and व्योम्नि are correct locatives and the verse takes the contracted व्योम्नि. It is the word that made व्योमगङ्गा at 1.45, the Gaṅgā that runs in the sky; two stanzas apart the poem has both Gaṅgās, the one overhead and the one on the ground the cloud is now above.

    • Aṣṭādhyāyī — 6.4.136 विभाषा ङिश्योः
    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.53: paścārdhabhāgena vyomni sthitvā
  • in-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    पूर्वार्धलम्बी

    लम्बिन्, from √लम्ब् with णिनि

leaning down by its forequarters — nominative, describing त्वम्. √लम्ब् is to hang or sag, the root whose middle participle stood at 1.43 as लम्बमानस्य and whose second person the cloud was given at 1.47 as व्यालम्बेथाः; here it is inside an -इन् noun instead, and the generator that could build no table for the verb declines the noun without trouble

  • pronoun, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    त्वम्

    printed त्वं

    युष्मद्

you — the cloud, and the subject of तर्कयेः. The poem alternates between this त्वम् and the courteous भवान्, and both stand in this stanza: त्वम् for the one being told what to do, भवतः three words later for whose shadow it is

  • अव्यय

    चेत्

    printed चेदच्छस्फटिकविशदं

    चेत्

if — the first चेत् of the poem, where 1.27 used यदि. It differs from यदि in where it can stand: चेत् never opens its clause and यदि usually does, so the condition here begins with त्वम् and the 'if' arrives second. Mallinātha leaves it at the end of the protasis where the verse puts it, विचारयेश्चेत्, and supplies no तर्हि — the apodosis is marked by स्यात् instead

  • a-stem neuter, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    अच्छस्फटिकविशदम्

    printed चेदच्छस्फटिकविशदं

    विशद

bright — neuter accusative, agreeing with अम्भः. Mallinātha glosses the word alone as अवदात, which is the white of a clean thing rather than the white of a colour, and lets the compound in front of it say how bright

  • √तर्क्, class 10, विधिलिङ्, parasmaipada, second person singular

    तर्कयेः

    printed तर्कयेस्तिर्यगम्भः

    √तर्क्

should you take it into your head — Mallinātha glosses विचारयेः, 'you should consider'. √तर्क् is the root of तर्क, reasoning, and of the whole vocabulary of inference; in the tenth class it is thinking a thing over rather than proving it. The optative is not the injunction it was at 1.52, where Mallinātha wrote विध्यर्थे लिङ्: here it is the लिङ् of a supposition, and it is answered by a second optative, स्यात्, at the head of the last pāda

The whole stanza is one conditional built on two optatives. तर्कयेः, glossed विचारयेः, “should you take it into your head,” is the optative of a supposition — not the injunction that stood one verse earlier at 1.52, where Mallinātha wrote विध्यर्थे लिङ्, but the लिङ् of “if it were so.” चेत्, “if,” marks its clause the condition; it differs from the यदि of 1.27 in that it never opens its clause, so the “if” arrives second, after त्वम्. The answer is a second optative, स्यात्, “she would be,” at the head of the last pāda — the same form that answered उपेक्षेत at 1.8. Sanskrit needs no separate word for “would”; the mood carries it in both halves, तर्कयेः for what the cloud might do and स्यात् for what would then be the case.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.53: tarkaye vicārayeścet … abhirāmā syāt
  • añc-stem neuter, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    तिर्यक्

    printed तर्कयेस्तिर्यगम्भः

    तिर्यञ्च्

sidelong — an accusative doing an adverb's work, and Mallinātha spells the construction out: तिरश्चीनं यथा तथा, 'in such a way as to be crosswise'. It says how the drinking is done, not what is drunk: the elephant does not put its mouth straight down into the river but takes the water aslant, which is what leaves the reflection lying along the current instead of standing under the cloud. तिर्यञ्च् declines its own way: the न् of the strong cases drops in the neuter singular and the च् hardens to क्

  • as-stem neuter, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    अम्भः

    printed तर्कयेस्तिर्यगम्भः

    अम्भस्

water — the object of पातुम्, and an अस्-stem shows the accusative and the nominative alike, so nothing on the page decides which it is and only the infinitive does. Mallinātha settles it by putting it next to the genitive that owns it, तस्या गङ्गाया अम्भः

  • √सृप् + शतृ + ङीप्, तृतीया एकवचन instrumental singular

    संसर्पन्त्या

    संसर्पन्ती, from सम् + √सृप्

creeping along — agreeing with छायया, and Mallinātha glosses it सङ्क्रामन्त्या, 'passing over'. The same participle stood at 1.28 in the genitive, संसर्पन्त्याः, of the Nirvindhyā gliding along; there it was the river that crept and here it is a shadow on one. √सृप् is of the first class and puts a nasal in before the शतृ, so the feminine is संसर्पन्ती and not संसर्पती

  • अव्यय

    सपदि

    सपदि

at once — literally 'on the foot', in the way English says on the spot. It is the word that measures the whole conditional: the moment the cloud stoops, the false confluence is there, with nothing between the stooping and the look of it

  • at-stem masculine, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    भवतः

    भवत्

your — the courteous word for 'you', which takes a third-person verb when it is a subject and here is only a genitive belonging to छायया. It stood in the same case at 1.11, 1.12 and 1.27, and the stanza has already said त्वम् once: the poem uses both without a change of tone. भवत् is the polite word for you and stands where a pronoun would, but its endings are the ordinary at-stem ones

  • as-stem neuter, सप्तमी एकवचन locative singular

    स्रोतसि

    स्रोतस्

in the current — glossed प्रवाहे, in the flow. स्रोतस् is a river's movement rather than its body of water, which is why the shadow is said to creep in it: it is carried

  • ā-stem feminine, तृतीया एकवचन instrumental singular

    छायया

    printed छाययाऽसौ

    छाया

by your shadow — and Mallinātha glosses it प्रतिबिम्बेन, 'by the reflection', which is the other thing the word means and the one this line needs: what lies on the water is an image, not an absence of light. Three stanzas ago, at 1.50, the same instrumental sent the cloud's shadow into Kurukṣetra where the cloud itself was not allowed to go. Twice in four verses the shadow does what the cloud cannot: there it enters a field, here it makes a river

  • pronoun, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    असौ

    printed छाययाऽसौ

    अदस्

she there — Mallinātha names her again, असौ गङ्गा. अदस् is the pronoun for what is at a distance, so the word points down at the river from the height the cloud is at, and its nominative singular is असौ for both the masculine and the feminine

असौ, “she there,” is the nominative singular of अदस्, the pronoun for what is at a distance, and it is a form worth stopping on because it is built by dropping the ending, not adding one. Pāṇini 7.2.107 अदस औ सुलोपश्च orders that for अदस् before the nominative सु the ending सु is elided (सुलोप) and औ is substituted for the final, so अदस् + सु yields असौ — and the same असौ serves for both the masculine and the feminine. That is why the word can point at the Gaṅgā: Mallinātha names her, असौ गङ्गा, and the pronoun looks down at the river from the height the cloud is at.

    √अस्

she would be — the second half of the conditional, and the same form that answered उपेक्षेत at 1.8. Two optatives make the whole sentence: तर्कयेः for what the cloud might take it into its head to do, स्यात् for what would then be the case. Sanskrit needs no separate word for 'would'; the mood carries it twice

    printed स्यादस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमेवाभिरामा

सङ्गमा, the feminine the bahuvrīhi gives to सङ्गम

confluence — masculine as a noun, feminine here because the river the compound describes is, which is the same shift that showed on the page at 1.51 in अभिमतरसाम् and at 1.52 in इन्दुलग्नोर्मिहस्ता. Three stanzas running, the last word of the verse has been an a-stem masculine wearing a feminine ending because a bahuvrīhi put it there. The word is an a-stem masculine as a noun, and takes the feminine ā inside the bahuvrīhi

अस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमा is a four-member bahuvrīhi describing the river, and Mallinātha unpacks it a join at a time: अस्थान is न स्थानम्, “the wrong place”; उपगत is “come to,” अस्थाने उपगतः, arrived where it should not be; यमुनासङ्गम is यमुनायाः सङ्गमः, “the meeting with the Yamunā”; and the whole, as a bahuvrīhi, is “she who has got a Yamunā-meeting arrived at out of place.” He names what the wrong place is, प्रयागाद् अन्यत्र, “anywhere but Prayāga” — the Gaṅgā and the Yamunā meet at one spot on the map and nowhere else, so a dark stream entering the bright one upstream is not a new confluence but the old one in the wrong county. The compound describes a river that has a confluence, not one that is one, and the इव keeps the whole thing imagined: she would only look as though she had it.

    इव

    इव

as though — the second इव of the stanza, and Mallinātha writes it into his paraphrase as तथाभूता इव, 'as though she were such'. He names no figure on it. This is the one of the two that a fancy could be built on — the confluence is imagined, not observed — and one stanza after naming उत्प्रेक्षा with its ground he says nothing here

  • ā-stem feminine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    अभिरामा

    अभिरामा, the feminine of अभिराम

lovely — the predicate of स्यात्, and the last word of the verse. अभिराम is what pleases when you look at it, from अभि + √रम्, to take delight in; the beauty is in the beholding, which is the right word for a river that is only lovely from the height the cloud is at. It is the feminine of an a-stem adjective

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose commentary is written as anvaya and takes the two halves as protasis and apodosis; where he reads पश्चार्धलम्बी this order carries the पूर्वार्धलम्बी the text prints“suragaja iva kaściddiggaja iva vyomni … tena lambata iti paścārdhalambī san … accha sphaṭikaviśadaṃ … tasyā gaṅgāyā ambhastiryak … pātuṃ tvaṃ tarkaye vicārayeścet | sapadi srotasi pravāhe saṃsarpantyā saṅkrāmantyā bhavataśchāyayā pratibimbenāsau … abhirāmā syāt”

the dependency structure

स्यात् · क्रिया — she would be; the apodosis, and one of the two optatives that make the whole sentence, answering तर्कयेः

चेत् · if — the particle that joins the two halves; it never opens its own clause, so the ‘if’ stands second and marks everything under it as the condition स्यात् answers

तर्कयेः · क्रिया — should you take it into your head; the protasis verb, glossed विचारयेः, an optative of supposition and not of command

त्वम् · कर्ता — you, the cloud; the subject of तर्कयेः

सुरगजः · उपमान — like an elephant of the gods; nominative, taking the case of त्वम् because इव compares it to that

इव · — like; the comparison particle, carrying सुरगजः onto त्वम्

पूर्वार्धलम्बी · agreeing with त्वम् — leaning down by its forequarters, its front half tipped toward the water; an agent noun in णिनि

व्योम्नि · अधिकरण — in the sky; the locative where it hangs, व्योम्नि स्थित्वा

पातुम् · कर्म / infinitive — to drink; the object of तर्कयेः, what the cloud is to consider doing

अम्भः · कर्म of पातुम् — the water; her water, तस्या गङ्गाया अम्भः

तस्याः · षष्ठी — her; genitive belonging to अम्भः, the Gaṅgā’s

अच्छस्फटिकविशदम् · agreeing with अम्भः — bright as flawless crystal, निर्मलस्फटिकावदातम्

तिर्यक् · क्रियाविशेषण — sidelong; an accusative doing an adverb’s work, तिरश्चीनं यथा तथा, saying how the drinking is done

असौ · कर्ता — she there; the Gaṅgā, असौ गङ्गा, the subject of स्यात्

अस्थानोपगतयमुनासङ्गमा · बहुव्रीहि agreeing with असौ — she to whom a meeting with the Yamunā has come in the wrong place

इव · — as though; the comparison particle on the bahuvrīhi, तथाभूता इव

अभिरामा · predicate of स्यात् — lovely; the last word of the verse, the beauty that is only in the beholding

सपदि · क्रियाविशेषण — at once; the moment the cloud stoops, the false confluence is there, with nothing between

छायया · करण — by your shadow, प्रतिबिम्बेन; the reflection that makes the false confluence

संसर्पन्त्या · agreeing with छायया — creeping along, सङ्क्रामन्त्या

स्रोतसि · अधिकरण — in the current, प्रवाहे; where the shadow is carried

भवतः · षष्ठी — your; the courteous word for ‘you’, here a genitive belonging to छायया

uncheckedMallinātha’s Sañjīvinī for the anvaya and the reading; the Telugu drawn from Vedam Venkataraya Sastri’s Āndhra Meghasandeśam and the Bālānandinī

If, hanging in the sky by your forequarters like one of the elephants that hold up the quarters of the world, you should take it into your head to drink her water sidelong — water bright as flawless crystal — then at once, with your shadow creeping along in her current, she would look as lovely as though a meeting with the Yamunā had come to her in the wrong place.
