8.4.59
वा पदान्तस्य
लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 80 · प्रकरण 3, which opens at स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः · rule 19 of 41 in it
at the end of a word the homorganic-nasal substitution is optional
The previous rule (8.4.58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः) turns an अनुस्वार (the nasal hum ं) into the nasal of the following consonant's own class before a यय् consonant (any stop or semivowel but ह). This rule makes that substitution optional (वा, "or") when the अनुस्वार stands at the end of a पद, a finished word. So the prefix सम् before भृत "borne", once its म् has become अनुस्वार, may keep the class-nasal म् or the अनुस्वार: सम्भृतम् or संभृतम्. Both are correct; the chain shows the class-nasal.
