corrected pāda d reads संभृतं where the text prints संभ्र्तं.

The vowel sign is mangled: the text prints the consonant cluster भ्र् where the word wants भृ. As printed the pāda is sixteen syllables and does not scan; संभृतं, the past participle of √भृ with सम्, is what the metre requires and what the editions read.

The stanza's joins are worth walking. भवान् व्योमगङ्गाजलार्द्रैः keeps the न् of भवान्: a word-final न् before a voiced consonant, here the व् of व्योम-, stands unchanged. रक्षाहेतोर्नवशशिभृता turns a visarga to र् before the voiced न् of नव- (रक्षाहेतोः + नवशशिभृता). तद्धि is a त्-sandhi: the word-final त् of तत् voices to द् before the ह् of हि (Pāṇini 8.2.39), and the ह् becomes ध् (8.4.62), so तत् + हि → तद्धि. The rest is म् held as अनुस्वार before a consonant and given the following class's nasal (8.3.23, 8.4.59): नियतवसतिं पुष्प-, वासवीनां चमूनाम्, अत्यादित्यं हुतवह-, संभृतं तद्धि.

  • Chinnaya Sūri, Bālavyākaraṇam — సంధిపరిచ్ఛేదము; vendor/balavyakaranam-sandhi.txt
  • स्कन्दम् द्वितीया · accusative — कर्म, the object

    with नियतवसतिम्

  • पुष्पासारैः तृतीया · instrumental — करण, the instrument or cause

    with व्योमगङ्गाजलार्द्रैः

  • भवान् प्रथमा · nominative — कर्ता, the agent

    with पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा

  • रक्षाहेतोः पञ्चमी · ablative — अपादान, the point of departure

  • नवशशिभृता तृतीया · instrumental — करण, the instrument or cause

  • वासवीनाम् षष्ठी · genitive — सम्बन्ध, a relation to another word

  • चमूनाम् षष्ठी · genitive — षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे — a genitive of cause licensed by the word हेतु

A cause would ordinarily take the instrumental or the ablative, and Mallinātha even glosses रक्षा that way, रक्षया कारणेन, “by protection as the cause.” But because the word हेतु stands in the compound रक्षाहेतोः, the words for whose protection it is — वासवीनां चमूनाम्, “Indra's armies” — go to the genitive instead, by the rule षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे (Pāṇini 2.3.26): the sixth case is used of a cause when the word हेतु is employed with it. So चमूनाम् is a genitive not of possession but of cause, and it is the presence of हेतु that puts it there.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.45: camūnāṃ senānāṃ rakṣayā kāraṇena … “ṣaṣṭhī hetuprayoge” iti ṣaṣṭhī
  • हुतवहमुखे सप्तमी · locative — अधिकरण, the location

  • तत् प्रथमा · nominative — विधेयप्राधान्यात् — a neuter pronoun for a masculine referent

तत् points at Skanda, who is masculine, yet it is neuter. Mallinātha names the principle: विधेयप्राधान्यान्नपुंसकनिर्देशः, “the neuter is used because what is predicated takes precedence.” The predicate is तेजः, “fiery power,” which is neuter, and the pronoun agrees with the predicate rather than with the masculine thing it stands for. So the sentence is not “he is that light” but “that light is what he is,” and the grammar puts the weight on the claim being made.

नियतवसतिम्

नियत · वसति

  1. नियता वसतिः यस्य तम्

बहुव्रीहि — the one whose dwelling is fixed

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to स्कन्दम्. who lives there and does not leave — Mallinātha glosses नित्यसन्निहितम्, always at hand, and then tells the story the compound stands on: after the demon Tāraka was beaten, Skanda, pleased and asked by the gods, said 'I shall live here always, with Śiva and Pārvatī', and does. So the fixed dwelling is a promise kept rather than a habit. DCS reads the first member नियमित

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who supplies the story“niyatā vasatiryasya tam | nityasannihitamityarthaḥ || purā kila tārakākhyāsuravijayasantuṣṭaḥ suraprārthanāvaśādbhagavānbhavānīnandanaḥ skando nityamahamiha saha śivābhyāṃ vasāmītyuktvā tatra vasatīti prasiddhiḥ”

पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा

पुष्प · मेघ · कृत · आत्मन्

  1. पुष्पाणां मेघः

    तत्पुरुष (genitive) — a cloud of flowers

  2. अमेघं पुष्पमेघं कृतम्

तत्पुरुष (accusative) — made into a flower-cloud, which it was not before

  3. पुष्पमेघीकृतः आत्मा येन सः

बहुव्रीहि — the one who has made himself into one

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to भवान्. having made yourself a cloud of flowers — Mallinātha gives the inner compound first, पुष्पाणां मेघः पुष्पमेघः, then unpacks the whole and adds the reason it is possible at all: कामरूपत्वात्, 'because he can take any shape he wishes'. आत्मन् he glosses विग्रह, body, so what is remade is the shape and not the self. The middle of the compound is a च्वि formation — मेघ becomes मेघी before कृ — which is the construction for turning a thing into what it was not, and the same one that made मोघीकर्तुम् at 1.42

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who supplies the reason from the cloud's nature“puṣpāṇāṃ meghaḥ puṣpameghaḥ | puṣpameghīkṛtātmā kāmarūpatvātpuṣpavarṣukameghīkṛtavigrahaḥ san”

पुष्पासारैः

पुष्प · आसार

  1. पुष्पाणाम् आसाराः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — downpours of flowers

तत्पुरुष. with showers of flowers — Mallinātha glosses पुष्पसम्पातैः and fixes आसार with Amara: धारासम्पात आसारः, 'a falling of streams is āsāra'. The word is for hard rain, not for a sprinkling, so the flowers come down the way water does — which is the point of having made the cloud into a flower-cloud rather than merely of scattering petals

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, citing Amara“puṣpāsāraiḥ puṣpasampātaiḥ “dhārāsampāta āsāraḥ” ityamaraḥ”

व्योमगङ्गाजलार्द्रैः

व्योमन् · गङ्गा · जल · आर्द्र

  1. व्योम्नः गङ्गा

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the Ganges of the sky

  2. व्योमगङ्गायाः जलम्

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the water of that Ganges

  3. व्योमगङ्गाजलेन आर्द्राः

तत्पुरुष (instrumental) — wet with that water

तत्पुरुष — it agrees with पुष्पासारैः. wet with the water of the sky-Ganges — Mallinātha carries the compound over without unpacking it, so the vigraha is restored. What it does is make the flower-shower a real shower: the flowers are not dry, and the water on them is the water of the celestial Ganges, which is where a cloud at that height would have got it. The bathing the stanza asks for is therefore a bathing and not a metaphor

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who carries the compound over; the vigraha restored“sanvyomagaṅgājalārdraiḥ | puṣpāsāraiḥ puṣpasampātaiḥ”

रक्षाहेतोः

रक्षा · हेतु

  1. रक्षा एव हेतुः, तस्मात्

कर्मधारय — protection, and that is the reason

कर्मधारय. for the sake of protection — Mallinātha does not unpack the compound so much as replace it, रक्षया कारणेन and then रक्षार्थम्, putting रक्षा in the instrumental as the cause. The word हेतु inside it is doing grammatical work as well as lexical: it is what licenses the genitive वासवीनां चमूनाम्, by the rule षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे — the sixth case is used of a cause when the word हेतु stands with it

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, naming the rule; its number, 2.3.26 षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे, from skt-mcp“camūnāṃ senānāṃ rakṣayā kāraṇena | rakṣārthamityarthaḥ || “ṣaṣṭhī hetuprayoge” iti ṣaṣṭhī”

नवशशिभृता

नव · शशिन् · भृत्

  1. नवः शशी

    कर्मधारय — the new moon

  2. नवशशिनं बिभर्ति इति नवशशिभृत्, तेन

तत्पुरुष (accusative) — the one who wears it

तत्पुरुष. by him who wears the new moon — Mallinātha replaces the whole with a name rather than unpacking it: भगवता चन्द्रशेखरेण, by the Lord who has the moon on his crest. The compound names Śiva by the one thing on his head, and it names the moon as नव, new — a two-day crescent, which is the phase he is always shown with

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, who replaces the compound with a name; the vigraha restored“navaśaśibhṛtā bhagavatā candraśekhareṇa”

अत्यादित्यम्

अति · आदित्य

  1. आदित्यम् अतिक्रान्तम्

तत्पुरुष (accusative) — having gone past the sun

तत्पुरुष — it agrees with तेजः. brighter than the sun — Mallinātha's vigraha is आदित्यमतिक्रान्तम्, and he names the rule that allows it: अत्यादयः क्रान्ताद्यर्थे द्वितीयया, 'अति and the rest compound with an accusative in the sense of going beyond'. So the prefix is not attached to a verb here but stands as the first member of a compound whose second member is the thing surpassed. The word describes तेजः, and the accusative of the vigraha becomes a neuter nominative when the compound is put back together

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, naming the rule — a vārttika under Pāṇini 2.2.18 कुगतिप्रादयः“ādityamatikrāntamatyādityam || “atyādayaḥ krāntādyarthe dvitīyayā” iti samāsaḥ”

हुतवहमुखे

हुत · वह · मुख

  1. हुतस्य वहः

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the carrier of what is offered — fire

  2. हुतवहस्य मुखम्

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the mouth of that fire

तत्पुरुष. in the mouth of fire — Mallinātha derives the inner word before using it: वहतीति वहः, 'what carries is वह', by पचाद्यच्, the rule that gives the पच् group the affix अच्; then हुतस्य वहो हुतवहो वह्निः, the carrier of the oblation is fire. A name for fire built entirely out of what fire does at a sacrifice. He then says why the mouth in particular is named: मुखग्रहणं तु शुद्धत्वसूचनार्थम्, 'the word mouth is used to indicate purity', and quotes the Śambhurahasya on which part of each creature is purest

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, deriving वह and citing the Śambhurahasya; the sūtra number 3.1.134 नन्दिग्रहिपचादिभ्यो ल्युणिन्यचः from skt-mcp“vahatīti vahaḥ || pacādyac || hutasya vaho hutavaho vahnistasya mukhe sambhṛtaṃ sañcitam || … mukhagrahaṇaṃ tu śuddhatvasūcanārtham”

  • अव्यय

    तत्र

    तत्र

there — glossed देवगिरौ, on Devagiri. The same indeclinable that stood for Ujjayinī at 1.39, doing the same work: the place was named in the stanza before and the one word carries it over

  • a-stem masculine, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    स्कन्दम्

    printed स्कन्दं

    स्कन्द

Skanda — Mallinātha gives two more of his names rather than a gloss, कुमारं स्वामिनम्, the Boy and the Lord. He is Śiva's son, born to kill Tāraka, and the whole stanza is an instruction to worship him: the cloud is to become a flower-cloud and bathe the god where he stands

  • i-stem masculine, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    नियतवसतिम्

    printed नियतवसतिं

    वसति

dwelling — the same noun that stood at 1.39 in रमणवसतिम्, where it was feminine and meant a lover's house. Here it is masculine, because a bahuvrīhi takes the gender of what it describes, and the accusative singular happens to be the same form either way. So the shift is invisible on the page and shows only in the analysis. वसति is feminine as a noun and masculine here, taking the gender of the god the bahuvrīhi describes

  • an-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा

    आत्मन्

self — and Mallinātha glosses it विग्रह, body, which keeps the change physical: what the cloud turns into a flower-cloud is its shape. The same word stood at 1.42 as छायात्मा, where the self was a reflection; here it is a body that can be remade at will

पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा, “having made yourself a cloud of flowers,” carries a च्वि formation at its heart. च्वि is the operation that turns a thing into what it was not: मेघ becomes मेघी before कृ, and मेघीकृ means “to make into a cloud.” Mallinātha builds it up in stages — पुष्पाणां मेघः पुष्पमेघः, “a cloud of flowers,” then पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा, “one who has made his own body into such a cloud.” He adds the reason it is even possible, कामरूपत्वात्, “because he can take any shape he wishes,” and glosses आत्मन् as विग्रह, “body,” so what is remade is the shape and not the self. It is the same च्वि that made मोघीकर्तुम् at 1.42.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.45: puṣpāṇāṃ meghaḥ puṣpameghaḥ | puṣpameghīkṛtātmā kāmarūpatvāt … kṛtavigrahaḥ san
  • a-stem masculine, तृतीया बहुवचन instrumental plural

    पुष्पासारैः

    आसार

downpours — glossed सम्पातैः and fixed from Amara as धारासम्पातः, a falling of streams. The instrumental is what the bathing is done with, and the plural counts the bursts: not one shower but a run of them

  • √स्ना with णिच्, class 2, लोट्, parasmaipada, third person singular

    स्नपयतु

    √स्ना with णिच्

let him bathe — glossed अभिषिञ्चतु, let him anoint, which is the word for a ritual bathing rather than a wash. The causative of √स्ना: not 'bathe' but 'make to bathe', so the cloud does the bathing to somebody else. Mallinātha writes स्वयमेव into his gloss and then gives the reason — स्वयंपूजाया उत्तमत्वात्, worship done in person is the best kind — and quotes the Śambhurahasya, which ranks it: oneself best, one's brothers and sons middling, servants worst

स्नपयतु, “let him bathe,” is a causative, and the causative is the point. √स्ना is “to bathe”; with the causative affix णिच् it becomes स्नपय-, “to make bathe, to give a bath to.” So the cloud does not bathe — it bathes Skanda, glossed अभिषिञ्चतु, “let it anoint,” the word for a ritual bathing and not a wash. Mallinātha writes स्वयमेव, “in person,” into the sense: the cloud is to send no one, because worship done oneself is the best kind, स्वयंपूजाया उत्तमत्वात्. He quotes the Śambhurahasya, which ranks it — oneself best, brothers and sons middling, servants worst. The imperative stands in the third person because its subject is the polite भवान्.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.45: bhavānsvayameva snapayatvabhiṣiñcatu | svayaṃpūjāyā uttamatvāditi bhāvaḥ
  • at-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    भवान्

    भवत्

your honour — the polite 'you', which is why the imperative above it is in the third person and not the second. Mallinātha adds स्वयमेव to it, 'you yourself', because the whole point of the instruction is that the cloud is not to send anyone. भवत् is the polite word for you and stands where a pronoun would, but its endings are the ordinary at-stem ones

  • a-stem masculine, तृतीया बहुवचन instrumental plural

    व्योमगङ्गाजलार्द्रैः

    आर्द्र

wet — the same adjective that described the elephant-hide at 1.38, where Mallinātha had to say what the wetness was. Here he says nothing, because the compound in front of it already has

  • u-stem masculine, पञ्चमी एकवचन ablative singular

    रक्षाहेतोः

    printed रक्षाहेतोर्नवशशिभृता

    हेतु

reason — and it is doing double duty. Read as a word it means 'because of protection'; read as a piece of grammar it is the हेतु whose presence puts वासवीनां चमूनाम् into the genitive rather than the case a cause would otherwise take. Mallinātha names the rule for exactly that

रक्षाहेतोः, “for the sake of protection,” teaches a genitive of cause. Mallinātha does not so much unpack the compound as replace it — रक्षया कारणेन, then रक्षार्थम् — putting रक्षा in the instrumental as the cause. But the word हेतु sitting inside the compound is doing grammatical work: it is what licenses the genitive वासवीनां चमूनाम्, “of Indra's armies,” by the rule षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे (Pāṇini 2.3.26), “the sixth case is used of a cause when the word हेतु stands with it.” Without हेतु the cause would take another case; with it, the two words go to the genitive. Skanda was made the general of those armies, and the fire that is his seed was gathered to keep them safe.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.45: rakṣārthamityarthaḥ || “ṣaṣṭhī hetuprayoge” iti ṣaṣṭhī
  • t-stem masculine, तृतीया एकवचन instrumental singular

    नवशशिभृता

    printed रक्षाहेतोर्नवशशिभृता

    भृत्, from √भृ

bearer — the root √भृ used as a noun with nothing added, which is the same formation as कररुध् at 1.41 and makes the compound's ending a bare consonant. The instrumental is the agent of संभृतम्: it was Śiva who gathered the fire. The root itself stands as an agent noun, the affix क्विप् leaving nothing behind

  • ī-stem feminine, षष्ठी बहुवचन genitive plural

    वासवीनाम्

    printed वासवीनां

    वासवी, the feminine of वासव

Indra's — Mallinātha derives it rather than translating: वासवस्येमा वासव्यः, 'these are Vāsava's', by the rule तस्येदम्, which gives the affix अण् in the sense 'this belongs to that'. Then he glosses the derived word with another derived word, ऐन्द्रीणाम्, made the same way from इन्द्र. The armies are Indra's, and Skanda was made their general. It declines on the नदी pattern, which is the regular feminine ī-stem

  • ū-stem feminine, षष्ठी बहुवचन genitive plural

    चमूनाम्

    printed चमूनां

    चमू

armies — glossed सेनानाम्. चमू is a division of an army, and the genitive plural is here because the word हेतु stands in the compound before it: without हेतु the cause would take another case, and the rule Mallinātha names is what puts these two words in the sixth

  • a-stem neuter, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    अत्यादित्यम्

    printed अत्यादित्यं

    आदित्य

the sun — आदित्य is the son of Aditi, so the sun is named by his mother. The compound puts him in the accusative of the vigraha as the thing surpassed, and when it is put back together the whole word takes the neuter of तेजः, which it describes. आदित्य is masculine as a noun and neuter here, agreeing with तेजः

अत्यादित्यम्, “brighter than the sun,” is an अति-compound. Mallinātha's vigraha is आदित्यमतिक्रान्तम्, “having gone past the sun,” and he names the rule that builds it: अत्यादयः क्रान्ताद्यर्थे द्वितीयया, “अति and the rest compound with an accusative in the sense of surpassing.” So अति here is not a verbal prefix but the first member of a compound whose second member, आदित्य, is the thing surpassed — आदित्य being the son of Aditi, the sun named by his mother. The accusative of the vigraha, आदित्यम्, is what shows in the standing compound, and the whole word takes the neuter nominative of तेजः, which it describes.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.45: ādityamatikrāntamatyādityam || “atyādayaḥ krāntādyarthe dvitīyayā” iti samāsaḥ
  • a-stem neuter, सप्तमी एकवचन locative singular

    हुतवहमुखे

    मुख

mouth — and Mallinātha says the word was chosen rather than merely used: मुखग्रहणं तु शुद्धत्वसूचनार्थम्, 'the mention of the mouth is to signal purity'. He backs it with a verse of the Śambhurahasya listing which part of each thing is cleanest, in which the mouth of fire is one. So the locative is not only where the fire was put but a claim that it was not defiled by being put there

  • √भृ + क्त, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    संभृतम्

    printed संभृतं

    संभृत, from सम् + √भृ

gathered — glossed सञ्चितम्, collected together. The ordinary passive क्त, and the agent is the instrumental नवशशिभृता two pādas back. The same root stands twice in this stanza, once as a participle and once as the bare-root agent noun भृत् inside the compound above

  • pronoun, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    तत्

    printed तद्धि

    तद्

that — and Mallinātha says what it points at and why it is not in that word's gender: तत् is Skanda, who is masculine, and the pronoun is neuter because it takes the gender of the predicate. He names the principle — विधेयप्राधान्यान्नपुंसकनिर्देशः, 'the neuter is used because what is being predicated takes precedence'. So the sentence is not 'he is that light' but 'that light is what he is', and the grammar puts the weight where the claim is

  • अव्यय

    हि

    printed तद्धि

    हि

for — the particle of a reason given, and it is what makes the last pāda the ground of the first three. Mallinātha treats the whole half as the justification for worshipping Skanda at all, and closes on it: अतः पूज्यमिति भावः, 'therefore it is worthy of worship'

  • as-stem neuter, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    तेजः

    तेजस्

fiery power — the same word that stood at 1.38 as the dusk-light the cloud was to put on, and here it is the seed of a god. Mallinātha's last word on it is the strongest claim in the stanza: तेजो हि साक्षाद्भगवतो हरस्यैव मूर्त्यन्तरम्, 'that light is quite literally another body of the Lord Hara himself'. Which is why the cloud is asked to bathe Skanda in person

तेजः, “fiery power,” is the seed of the god and the strongest claim in the stanza. The same word stood at 1.38 as the dusk-light the cloud was to wear; here it is Skanda's own तेजस्, gathered by Śiva in the mouth of fire. Mallinātha's last word on it is unhedged: तेजो हि साक्षाद्भगवतो हरस्यैव मूर्त्यन्तरम्, “that light is quite literally another body of the Lord Hara himself,” and he closes अतः पूज्यमिति भावः, “therefore it is worthy of worship.” The particle हि makes the whole last half the ground of the command: the cloud is to bathe Skanda in person because this is what Skanda is. And तत्, the pronoun that points at him, is neuter — विधेयप्राधान्यात्, because the predicate तेजः takes precedence over the masculine referent.

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose commentary is written as anvaya and takes the second half as a separate sentence introduced by रक्षेति“tatra devagirau niyatā vasatiryasya tam … skandaṃ kumāraṃ svāminam | … puṣpameghīkṛtātmā … sanvyomagaṅgājalārdraiḥ | puṣpāsāraiḥ … bhavānsvayameva s[n]apayatu … navaśaśibhṛtā … vāsavīnāṃ camūnāṃ rakṣayā kāraṇena … hutavaho vahnistasya mukhe sambhṛtaṃ sañcitamādityamatikrāntamatyādityam … tejo hi”

the dependency structure

स्नपयतु · क्रिया — let him bathe; the causative of √स्ना with णिच्, ‘make to bathe’, so the cloud gives Skanda a ritual bath, अभिषिञ्चतु, and the imperative is the request

भवान् · कर्ता — your honour, the polite ‘you’; the subject of the third-person imperative, and Mallinātha adds स्वयमेव, ‘you yourself’, since the cloud is to send no one

पुष्पमेघीकृतात्मा · बहुव्रीहि agreeing with भवान् — having made your own body a cloud of flowers, पुष्पमेघीकृतविग्रहः, possible कामरूपत्वात्, because the cloud can take any shape

स्कन्दम् · कर्म — Skanda, कुमारं स्वामिनम्, the Boy and the Lord; the god the cloud is to bathe

नियतवसतिम् · बहुव्रीहि agreeing with स्कन्दम् — whose dwelling there is fixed, नित्यसन्निहितम्, always at hand; the god who does not leave the place

पुष्पासारैः · करण / तृतीया — with showers of flowers, पुष्पसम्पातैः; the instrument of the bathing, and आसार is a hard downpour, धारासम्पातः, not a sprinkling

व्योमगङ्गाजलार्द्रैः · agreeing with पुष्पासारैः — wet with the water of the sky-Ganges, so the flower-shower is a real shower and the bathing a bathing

तत्र · क्रियाविशेषण / अधिकरण — there, देवगिरौ, on Devagiri; the place named in the stanza before, carried over in one word

तेजः · the ground of the command — for that fiery power of his; the last half is a second, verbless sentence justifying the worship, hung here under the verb it explains

हि · for — the particle of a reason given, making the last half the reason for the first; अतः पूज्यमिति भावः, ‘therefore it is worthy of worship’

तत् · that — the pronoun pointing at Skanda, neuter by विधेयप्राधान्यात् though he is masculine; ‘that light is what he is’

अत्यादित्यम् · agreeing with तेजः — brighter than the sun, आदित्यमतिक्रान्तम्, an अति-compound naming what it surpasses

संभृतम् · agreeing with तेजः — gathered, सञ्चितम्; the passive क्त, its agent the instrumental नवशशिभृता

हुतवहमुखे · अधिकरण — in the mouth of fire, हुतवहस्य मुखे; the mouth named to signal purity, शुद्धत्वसूचनार्थम्

नवशशिभृता · करण / कर्तरि तृतीया — by him who wears the new moon, चन्द्रशेखरेण, Śiva; the agent who gathered the fire

रक्षाहेतोः · हेतु — for the sake of protection, रक्षार्थम्; the हेतु-compound that licenses the genitive below

चमूनाम् · षष्ठी हेतुप्रयोगे — of the armies, सेनानाम्; the genitive of cause licensed by the word हेतु

वासवीनाम् · agreeing with चमूनाम् — Indra's, ऐन्द्रीणाम्; the armies Skanda was made general of

uncheckedMallinātha’s Sañjīvinī for the anvaya and the reading; the Telugu drawn from Vedam Venkataraya Sastri’s Āndhra Meghasandeśam and the Bālānandinī

There, make yourself a cloud of flowers and bathe Skanda, who never leaves that place, with showers of blossom wet from the Ganges of the sky. For that fiery power of his, gathered in the mouth of fire by the wearer of the new moon to keep Indra's armies safe, is brighter than the sun.
