स्खलितसुभगं दर्शितावर्तनाभेः and प्रणयवचनं विभ्रमो both keep a word-final म् as अनुस्वार before a consonant — स्खलितसुभगम् before द्, प्रणयवचनम् before व्. The same म् behaves differently before a vowel: स्त्रीणाम् + आद्यम् keeps the म् whole and runs the words together as स्त्रीणामाद्यम्. विभ्रमो हि shows a visarga going to ओ — विभ्रमः stands before the voiced ह्, and अः before a voiced sound becomes ओ. रसाभ्यन्तरः सन्निपत्य keeps its visarga instead, since it falls before the sibilant स्. Inside the compounds the vowels fuse — रस + अभ्यन्तर gives रसाभ्यन्तर, अ and अ to a single आ, and दर्शित + आवर्त gives दर्शितावर्त, अ and आ likewise to आ.

वीचिक्षोभस्तनितविहगश्रेणिकाञ्चीगुणायाः

वीचि · क्षोभ · स्तनित · विहग · श्रेणि · काञ्ची · गुण

  3. स्तनिताः विहगाः

कर्मधारय — the birds, and they are the crying ones

  7. वीचिक्षोभस्तनितविहगश्रेणिकाञ्चीगुणा यस्याः तस्याः

बहुव्रीहि — of her who wears it

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to निर्विन्ध्यायाः. the river whose girdle-string is a line of birds her own waves set crying — Mallinātha names the birds haṃsas, and stops on the क्त of स्तनित to say it is कर्तरि, active: the birds are not sounded, they sound

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī“vīcikṣobheṇa taraṅgacalanena stanitānāṃ mukharāṇām || kartari ktaḥ || vihagānāṃ haṃsānāṃ śreṇiḥ paṅktir eva kāñcīguṇo yasyāstasyāḥ”

स्खलितसुभगम्

स्खलित · सुभग

  1. स्खलितेन सुभगम्

तत्पुरुष (instrumental) — lovely by its stumbling

तत्पुरुष. charming in the way it falters — Mallinātha takes स्खलित twice over: the water's trip over the shallows, and a woman's unsteady step in her wine. The neuter then stands as an adverb, which he spells out with यथा तथा: she moves in such a way that the stumble is the charm

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī“skhalitenopaskhalanena madaskhalitena ca subhagaṃ yathā tathā”

दर्शितावर्तनाभेः

दर्शित · आवर्त · नाभि

  1. आवर्तः एव नाभिः

कर्मधारय — the eddy is the navel

  2. दर्शिता आवर्तनाभिः

कर्मधारय — and that navel is uncovered

  3. दर्शितावर्तनाभिः यस्याः तस्याः

बहुव्रीहि — of her who shows it

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to निर्विन्ध्यायाः. showing the navel that is her eddy — Mallinātha glosses दर्शित as प्रकटित, uncovered, and quotes Amara for आवर्त being the turning of water

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī, whose own wording of this vigraha is corrupt where the transcription reads नाभिया; the chain is restored from what survives of the line and from the ending the verse prints“darśitaḥ prakaṭita āvarte ’mbhasāṃ bhrama eva nābhi… || “āvarto ’mbhasāṃ bhramaḥ” ityamaraḥ”

निर्विन्ध्यायाः

निर् · विन्ध्य

  1. विन्ध्यात् निष्क्रान्ता

तत्पुरुष (ablative) — she who has come out of the Vindhya

तत्पुरुष. the Nirvindhyā, a river named for where it leaves the hills — Mallinātha cites the rule that lets निर् and its fellows compound with a fifth case in the sense of "gone out from", and then a second that stops this compound taking the gender of its last member, as a tatpuruṣa otherwise would: विन्ध्य is masculine and the river stays feminine

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī“niṣkrāntā vindhyānnirvindhyā nāma nadīm || “nirādayaḥ krāntādyarthe pañcamyāḥ” iti samāsaḥ | “dviguprāptāpannālam-” ityādinā paravalliṅgatāpratiṣedhaḥ”

रसाभ्यन्तरः

रस · अभ्यन्तर

  1. रसः अभ्यन्तरे यस्य सः

बहुव्रीहि — having her water inside him

  2. रसेन अभ्यन्तरः

तत्पुरुष (instrumental) — and, the other way, made intimate by love

बहुव्रीहि — it refers to त्वम्. with her water in you — and, read the second way, taken into her heart. Mallinātha gives both: रस is जल in the one and शृङ्गार in the other, with a lexicon quoted for the nine things the word can mean, and he lets the two stand together — सर्वथा तस्या रसम् अनुभव, take her rasa however you take it

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī“raso jalamabhyantare yasya saḥ | anyatra rasena śṛṅgāreṇābhyantaro ’ntaraṅgo bhava | sarvathā tasyā rasamanubhave[t]yarthaḥ”

प्रणयवचनम्

प्रणय · वचन

  1. प्रणयस्य वचनम्

तत्पुरुष (genitive) — the word love speaks

तत्पुरुष. the sentence in which love asks — Mallinātha glosses प्रार्थनावाक्यम्, a request put into words. प्रणय is the word that stood at 1.27 for acquaintance; here it is what acquaintance goes on to ask for

uncheckedMallinātha, Sañjīvinī“ādyaṃ praṇayavacanaṃ prārthanāvākyaṃ hi”

  • ā-stem feminine, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    वीचिक्षोभस्तनितविहगश्रेणिकाञ्चीगुणायाः

    गुणा, the feminine of गुण

girdle-cord — the last member of the compound and the only inflected part of it. The whole pāda stands in this genitive, waiting for the निर्विन्ध्यायाः of pāda 3. A bahuvrīhi ending in an a-stem takes ā when it describes a woman or a river, so काञ्चीगुण becomes काञ्चीगुणा

The long first pāda is one bahuvrīhi describing the river, and it unfolds step by step. The waves' tossing (वीचीनां क्षोभः) sets the birds crying (वीचिक्षोभेण स्तनिताः); the line of those crying birds (विहगानां श्रेणिः, and Mallinātha names them haṃsas) is her girdle-cord (काञ्चीगुणः); and she is the river who wears it. One grammar point Mallinātha stops on: स्तनित ends in the past-participle suffix क्त, which is usually passive, but here he marks it कर्तरि, active — the birds are not “sounded”, they sound. And the ending: a bahuvrīhi built on an a-stem takes आ when it describes a woman or a river, so काञ्चीगुण becomes काञ्चीगुणा, genitive काञ्चीगुणायाः.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.28: vīcikṣobheṇa taraṅgacalanena stanitānāṃ mukharāṇām || kartari ktaḥ || vihagānāṃ haṃsānāṃ śreṇiḥ paṅktir eva kāñcīguṇo yasyāstasyāḥ
  • √सृप् + शतृ + ङीप्, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    संसर्पन्त्याः

    संसर्पन्ती, from सम् + √सृप्

gliding along — a present participle made feminine, agreeing with निर्विन्ध्यायाः. Mallinātha glosses it twice, प्रवहन्त्याः and गच्छन्त्याः: flowing, and going. √सृप् is of the first class, which puts a nasal in before the शतृ, so the feminine is संसर्पन्ती and not संसर्पती

संसर्पन्त्याः, “gliding along”, is a present participle made feminine to agree with the river — Mallinātha glosses it twice, प्रवहन्त्याः and गच्छन्त्याः, flowing and going. The corpus tags it a क्त past participle from the printed form; read as शतृ it is the ongoing gliding the sense wants. The adverb on it, स्खलितसुभगम्, “lovely by its stumble”, is where Mallinātha hears two things at once: स्खलित is the water's trip over the shallows and a woman's unsteady step in her wine (मदस्खलित). Vedam adds that this second sense is left for the discerning to catch. The neuter accusative then does an adverb's work, यथा तथा: she moves in such a way that the faltering itself is the charm.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.28: saṃsarpantyāḥ pravahantyā gacchantyāśca | skhalitenopaskhalanena madaskhalitena ca subhagaṃ yathā tathā
    • Vedam Venkataraya Sastri, Āndhra Meghasandeśam — 1.28 ప్రతిపదార్థము; vendor/vedam-meghasandesam-telugu-ocr.txt
  • a-stem neuter, द्वितीया एकवचन accusative singular

    स्खलितसुभगम्

    printed स्खलितसुभगं

    सुभग

so as to be lovely — a neuter accusative doing an adverb's work on संसर्पन्त्याः, which is what Mallinātha's यथा तथा marks

  • i-stem feminine, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    दर्शितावर्तनाभेः

    नाभि

navel — of the whirlpool, which Mallinātha reads as the river's navel shown above the water. नाभि is masculine as a noun, and at the end of a bahuvrīhi describing the river it takes her gender while keeping the endings it had, so the genitive is नाभेः

  • ā-stem feminine, षष्ठी एकवचन genitive singular

    निर्विन्ध्यायाः

    निर्विन्ध्या

of the Nirvindhyā — the river the road meets midway to Ujjayinī. Mallinātha's lead-in says as much before the verse begins: on his way to Ujjayinī, in the middle of the road, this is his meeting with her

The river's name is a compound with a rule of its own. निर् plus विन्ध्य means “gone out from the Vindhya”: विन्ध्यात् निष्क्रान्ता = निर्विन्ध्या. Mallinātha cites निरादयः क्रान्ताद्यर्थे पञ्चम्याः, which lets निर् and its fellows compound with a word in the fifth case (ablative, the “from” case) in the sense of coming out from. Then a second rule blocks what a tatpuruṣa would normally do — take the gender of its last member: विन्ध्य is masculine, but the river stays feminine (परवल्लिङ्गताप्रतिषेधः, by द्विगुप्राप्तापन्नालम्- and the rest). So a masculine hill-name yields a feminine river-name.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.28: niṣkrāntā vindhyānnirvindhyā nāma nadīm || “nirādayaḥ krāntādyarthe pañcamyāḥ” iti samāsaḥ | “dviguprāptāpannālam-” ityādinā paravalliṅgatāpratiṣedhaḥ
  • in-stem masculine, सप्तमी एकवचन locative singular

    पथि

    पथिन्

on the road — Mallinātha names which road: उज्जयिनीपथे. The same locative stood at 1.14 of the road through the sky, and the same stem was the पन्थाः of 1.27, where it bent. पथिन् is irregular: it declines on पन्थान् in the strong cases and drops to पथि here

  • √भू, class 1, लोट्, parasmaipada, second person singular

    भव

    √भू

be — the imperative, and the verse's one command. Mallinātha carries it into his own gloss and then replaces it: अभ्यन्तरो भव comes out as तस्या रसम् अनुभव, take her rasa

भव is the verse's one finite verb, an imperative (लोट्) of √भू, “to be”. The whole verse builds to this single command, and Mallinātha restates it from अभ्यन्तरो भव to तस्या रसम् अनुभव. Vedam draws out the flavour of the imperative (लोट्ప్రయోగస్వారస్యము): she comes to you of her own accord, so do not take lightly what came unasked — meet her and fulfil her wish. The second half, headed by हि, gives the reason the command needs: a woman's first word of love is not spoken but played, so her whole approach — her stumbling glide, her shown navel — already is the asking.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.28: abhyantaro ’ntaraṅgo bhava … strīṇāṃ priyeṣu viṣaye vibhramo vilāsaḥ
    • Vedam Venkataraya Sastri, Āndhra Meghasandeśam — 1.28 తాత్పర్యము; vendor/vedam-meghasandesam-telugu-ocr.txt
  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    रसाभ्यन्तरः

    अभ्यन्तर

inner — Mallinātha glosses अन्तरङ्गः, one who is on the inside of a thing. The nominative is a predicate to भव: be that

The verse turns on the word रस, and Mallinātha reads it two ways at once. Plainly: रस = जल, water, and अभ्यन्तर = having it inside — “be the one with her water inside you”, take up her stream. Figuratively: रस = शृङ्गार, the love-mood, and अभ्यन्तर = अन्तरङ्ग, an intimate — “be taken into her heart”. He lets both stand: सर्वथा तस्या रसम् अनुभव, take her rasa however you take it. A single word carrying two readings kept live together is śleṣa, a “fusing”; here the two readings are the whole point of the line.

    • Mallinātha, Sañjīvinī — 1.28: raso jalamabhyantare yasya saḥ | anyatra rasena śṛṅgāreṇābhyantaro ’ntaraṅgo bhava | sarvathā tasyā rasamanubhaveti
  • ल्यप्

    सन्निपत्य

    सन्निपत्य, from सम् + नि + √पत्

having come down to her — Mallinātha glosses सङ्गत्य, having met. √पत् is the root of the उत्पत of 1.14, where the cloud was told to fly up; this is the first time it is told to come down

  • ī-stem feminine, षष्ठी बहुवचन genitive plural

    स्त्रीणाम्

    printed स्त्रीणामाद्यं

    स्त्री

of women — the verse leaves the one river and states what holds of women generally, which is what licenses the advice. स्त्री is irregular: it puts इय् in before a vowel ending, स्त्रियाः, though the genitive plural is the regular स्त्रीणाम्

  • a-stem neuter, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    आद्यम्

    printed स्त्रीणामाद्यं

    आद्य

first — agreeing with प्रणयवचनम्: the first word of asking, and it is spoken before anything is said

  • a-stem neuter, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    प्रणयवचनम्

    printed प्रणयवचनं

    वचन

a word — Mallinātha glosses वाक्यम्, a whole sentence rather than a single word

  • a-stem masculine, प्रथमा एकवचन nominative singular

    विभ्रमः

    printed विभ्रमो

    विभ्रम

play — Mallinātha glosses विलासः, and at the end of the verse says which play this was: the showing of the navel. The nominative is the subject and प्रणयवचनम् the predicate, so the play is the word rather than a substitute for it

  • अव्यय

    हि

    हि

for — it makes the second half the reason for the first. Mallinātha puts the objection it answers in so many words: without her asking, how is going in to her right?

  • a-stem masculine, सप्तमी बहुवचन locative plural

    प्रियेषु

    प्रिय

where their lovers are concerned — Mallinātha supplies विषये, in the matter of, which is the work this locative is doing

the dependency structure

भव · क्रिया — be; the verse's one imperative (लोट्), the command the whole verse builds to. Mallinātha carries it into his gloss and then restates it, अभ्यन्तरो भव coming out as तस्या रसम् अनुभव, take her rasa

रसाभ्यन्तरः · predicate — be the one “inside her with rasa”; रस is both her water (जल) and love (शृङ्गार), and Mallinātha lets both readings stand at once

सन्निपत्य · having come down to her, सङ्गत्य — √पत् is the root of the उत्पत of 1.14 where the cloud was told to fly up; here it is told to come down

पथि · अधिकरण — on the road, उज्जयिनीपथे, midway to Ujjayinī where he meets her

निर्विन्ध्यायाः · षष्ठी — the Nirvindhyā he comes down to, तस्या नद्याः; a masculine hill-name (विन्ध्य) turned into a feminine river-name

वीचिक्षोभस्तनितविहगश्रेणिकाञ्चीगुणायाः · bahuvrīhi agreeing with the river — whose girdle-cord is a line of birds her own waves set crying; स्तनित read कर्तरि, so the birds sound, they are not sounded

संसर्पन्त्याः · gliding along, प्रवहन्त्याः गच्छन्त्याः — a present participle agreeing with the river

स्खलितसुभगम् · क्रियाविशेषण — an adverbial neuter accusative on संसर्पन्त्याः, यथा तथा: she glides so that the stumble is the charm

दर्शितावर्तनाभेः · bahuvrīhi agreeing with the river — showing the navel that is her eddy; दर्शित glossed प्रकटित, uncovered

विभ्रमः · the reason, marked by हि — a woman's play, विलासः; Mallinātha names which play this was, the showing of the navel. The nominative subject of the second sentence, with प्रणयवचनम् its predicate: the play is the word, not a substitute for it

हि · for — makes the second half the reason the command needs, answering “without her asking, how is going in to her right?”

स्त्रीणाम् · षष्ठी — of women; the verse leaves the one river for the general truth that licenses the advice

प्रियेषु · अधिकरण — प्रियेषु विषये, in the matter of the men they love

प्रणयवचनम् · predicate — the first word of asking, प्रार्थनावाक्यम्, a request put into words

आद्यम् · agreeing with प्रणयवचनम् — first, spoken before anything is said

uncheckedMallinātha’s Sañjīvinī for the anvaya and the reading; the Telugu drawn from Vedam Venkataraya Sastri’s Āndhra Meghasandeśam and the Bālānandinī

On the road, where the Nirvindhyā goes by — her girdle-cord a line of birds her own waves set crying, gliding on with the charm of a stumble, showing you the navel that is her whirlpool — come down to her and be inside her: take her water in, and her love with it. For a woman's first word of asking to the man she loves is her play, and not anything she says.
