Where the augment आट् stands before a vowel, the augment and that vowel coalesce into a single vṛddhi vowel. This is the आट् prefixed to a vowel-initial root in the past tenses — इष् → ऐच्छत् "wanted", the आ of आट् and the इ giving ऐ — and the आट् the nadī and ā-stems take before their ङित् case endings, मति + आट् + ए → मत्यै. One rule serves both augments.
