The imperative's second-person singular ending हि (put there by 3.4.87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च) is dropped when it follows a short अ. So भू "to be", having reached भव + हि, loses the हि to give भव "be!"; व्रज् gives व्रज "go!"; अनु + सृ gives अनुसर; हृ gives हर. This is why these common imperatives end bare, in the root's own vowel, with no ending in sight.
