अव्ययादाप्सुपः

लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 370 · प्रकरण 11, which opens at स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम् · rule 5 of 5 in it

after an अव्यय, the आप् (feminine) and सुप् (case) endings undergo लुक्

After an अव्यय — an indeclinable word — the feminine suffix आप् and the case endings सुप् undergo लुक् (लुक्, a disappearance that leaves no trace, not even a mark on what stood before). A prefix like प्र is an अव्यय (an उपसर्ग, and so indeclinable), and when it joins a root it first takes a case ending which this rule then wipes out, so प्र meets मद् bare in प्रमत्तः "heedless". The same लुक् is why an indeclinable never shows an ending: the सुप् is added and at once removed. The derivation names this rule on the silent step where the prefix's ending drops.
