A feminine stem ending in short इ or उ — मति "thought", धेनु "cow" — is optionally given नदी status before a ङित् affix, that is before the dative, ablative, genitive and locative singular. When it is नदी it takes the नदी endings मत्यै, मत्याः, मत्याः, मत्याम्; when it is not, it takes the हरि-type गुण endings मतये, मतेः, मतेः, मतौ. So each of these four singular cases of the short इ- and उ-stem feminines has two forms. The च draws in the ई/ऊ stems that are not exclusively feminine, such as श्री and भू.
