An अन्-stem drops the अ of its -अन् body before a vowel-initial ending (that is 6.4.134); before the locative-singular ending ङि and before शी, that dropping is optional — विभाषा, “by choice.” So दधन् “curd” gives both दध्नि and दधनि in the locative singular, and व्योमन् “sky” gives व्योम्नि beside व्योमनि. The अन्-neuter declension carries this step, and the block reaches it through व्योम्नि (1.53), the shortened form Kālidāsa uses.
