The lengthening the preceding rule would give is withheld: a भ-stem (a stem before certain vowel-initial or य-initial endings) and the roots कुर् and छुर् keep a short penultimate vowel. So कृ "to do", built as कुर् before the present endings of the eighth class, keeps its short उ: कुर्वन्ति "they do", कुर्वन् "doing".
