The second-singular imperative ending हि drops after the उ of an affix — such as the class-5 and class-8 marker नु / उ — provided that उ is not preceded by a conjunct of consonants. So शृ + नु + हि loses the हि to give शृणु "hear!", and कुर् + उ + हि gives कुरु "do!". Where a conjunct comes first the हि stays, as in शक्नुहि "be able!".
