In a root that ends in र् or व्, the short इक् vowel (इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ) standing just before that final is lengthened before a suffix beginning with a consonant (हल्). तॄ "to cross" has by an earlier step become तिर्; before the क्त participle's न the इ of तिर् lengthens: तीर् + न → तीर्ण, and with the ending तीर्णः "crossed".
