Before any case ending (a सुप्), the interrogative stem किम् is replaced by क. So किम् + स् → कः, declined thereafter like the a-stem visarga, and किम् + अम् → कम्. Adding the particle चित्, चन or अपि to such a form makes it indefinite: कः → कश्चित् 'someone'.
