In the strong cases (सर्वनामस्थान) other than the vocative singular, the vowel before the न् lengthens — for महत् and for a conjunct that ends in स्. महत् takes नुम् and becomes महान्त्, giving महान्, महान्तौ, महान्तः. The क्वसु participle तस्थिवस्, once it has taken नुम् and become तस्थिवन्स्, lengthens the अ before its न् to तस्थिवांस्, and so declines तस्थिवान्, तस्थिवांसौ, तस्थिवांसः. It is the rule that gives these stems their long ā in the strong forms and their short vowel everywhere else.
