the final आ of घु, मा, स्था, गा, पा and हा becomes ई before a consonant-initial suffix

The घु roots (the short दा "to give" and धा "to place" set), together with मा "to measure", स्था "to stand", गा "to go/sing", पा "to drink" and हा (जहाति) "to abandon", replace their final आ with ई before a suffix that begins with a consonant (हल्) and is marked क् or ङ्. गै "to sing" first becomes गा; in the passive गा + य + ते the आ meets the consonant य and turns to ई, giving गीयते "is sung".
