एरनेकाचोऽसंयोगपूर्वस्य
लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 199 · प्रकरण 5, which opens at अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम् · rule 85 of 100 in it
a polysyllabic root-final ई not preceded by a conjunct becomes यण् before a vowel
The final ई of a root-stem becomes यण् (य्) before a vowel affix, when the stem has more than one vowel (अनेकाच्) and the ई is not preceded by a conjunct within the root. So अग्रणी, 'foremost' (अग्र + णी), which is polysyllabic and has a single consonant before its ई, gives अग्रण्यः in the nominative plural — अग्रणी + अस् → अग्रण्य् + अस्. A monosyllable like नी keeps इयङ् instead (नियः, by 6.4.77), and सुश्री, where a conjunct stands before the ई, keeps इयङ् too (सुश्रियौ). The rule sorts which long ई turns to य् and which stays a syllable.
