The present-participle affix शतृ appears as अत्; this rule inserts into it the augment नुम् — an infixed न् — so that अत् becomes अन्त्, when what follows is a long आ, the neuter plural ending शी, or the feminine long ई called नदी. So लिख् "to write" gives the feminine participle लिखन्ती "she writing": the stem लिख् + अत्, before the feminine ई, takes नुम् to become लिख् + अन्त् + ई. The same builds पृच्छन्ती "asking" and विक्षिपन्तीम् "tossing". It is the pair of 7.1.81, which makes the same augment obligatory for the commonest verb classes.
