प्रथमायाश्च द्विवचने भाषायाम्
लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 314 · प्रकरण 8, which opens at हो ढः · rule 65 of 108 in it
युष्मद् and अस्मद् take the vowel आ in the nominative dual in ordinary speech
In ordinary language (भाषायाम्, as against the Veda), the pronouns युष्मद् 'you' and अस्मद् 'we' take आ in place of their stem-final before the nominative dual ending — and, by the preceding rule, the accusative dual as well. Working on the द्विवचन stem युव and आव that 7.2.92 has already made, it gives युव + आ → युवा and आव + आ → आवा, and the ending closes the word as युवाम् 'you two', आवाम् 'us two' (2.50). It is the आत्व, the आ-substitution, that stands where a bare stem-vowel would otherwise meet the ending.
