अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः
लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 481 · प्रकरण 12, which opens at लः कर्मणि च भावे चाकर्मकेभ्यः · rule 111 of 179 in it
a stem's final इक् vowel is lengthened before a य-initial affix that is neither कृत् nor सार्वधातुक
The final इक् vowel — इ, उ, ऋ or ऌ — of an अङ्ग (the stem an affix attaches to) is lengthened before a य-initial affix marked कित् or ङित् (carrying क् or ङ् as its इत्) that is neither a कृत् (a primary root-suffix) nor a सार्वधातुक (a present-system suffix). The passive sign यक्, the य added to make a passive stem, is such an affix, so a passive lengthens the stem vowel before it. गीयते "it is sung", from the root गै "sing", carries this long ई; by the time the chain reaches this rule the vowel is already long, so the derivation names it on a silent step where nothing further changes.
