the short अ at the beginning of the perfect's reduplicate is lengthened to आ

In the perfect (लिट्), when the reduplicative syllable (अभ्यास) begins with a short अ, that अ is lengthened to आ. So अह् "to say", whose perfect reduplicates as अ + अह्, reaches आह "he said" and आहुः "they said" — अ + अह् + उस् → आ + अह् + उस्, the leading अ drawn out. The rule catches the reduplicates that open with a bare अ and gives them their long vowel.
