लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी · वरदराज
the ह् of नह् becomes ध् at word-end or before an obstruent
The ह् of the root नह् "to bind, to tie on" is replaced by ध् when it stands at the end of a word or before an obstruent (झल्, any stop or sibilant). So नह् + त gives नध् + त, and the sequence goes on to नद्ध — the poem's संनद्धे "armoured, girt for battle", where the ह् has become ध् before the त् of the क्त suffix. It is one of the small set of rules that fix a single root's final aspirate before a hard consonant.
