जन्, सन्, खन् replace their final by आ before सन् or a झल्-initial क्ङित् affix

The three roots जन् "be born", सन् "gain" and खन् "dig" replace their final consonant-and-vowel by आ before the desiderative affix सन् or before a झल्-initial affix marked कित् or ङित् (a झल् is any stop or spirant). जन् + क्त (the past participle -त, कित् and त-initial) → जा + त, and so जातम् "born", जातानि "the born ones".
