युष्मद् becomes युव and अस्मद् becomes आव before a dual case-ending
Before a case-ending in the dual, the pronoun युष्मद् 'you' has its body up to the म् replaced by युव, and अस्मद् 'we' by आव. So the dual of अस्मद् is built on आव — आवाम् 'us two' (2.50), आवयोः 'of us two' — and the dual of युष्मद् on युव — युवाम्, युवयोः. The substitution reaches only the part before the final द्, which later rules dispose of, and it is why the dual of these two pronouns looks nothing like their singular मद्, त्वद् or their plural अस्मद्, युष्मद् stems.
