In the vocative singular — the सम्बुद्धि, the case of calling to someone — a नदी-stem (a feminine ending in long ई or ऊ, such as नदी 'river', from which the class takes its name) and a word meaning 'mother' (अम्बार्थ) shorten that final vowel. So the long ई becomes short इ and the long ऊ becomes short उ: चण्डी 'the fierce one' is called हे चण्डि (2.44), कल्याणी 'lady of good fortune' is called हे कल्याणि (2.49), and गुणवती 'the woman of merit' is called हे गुणवति (2.47), each with the long vowel cut short at the moment of address. It is why the vocative of these feminines never keeps the long vowel their other cases carry.
