A झर् — a stop or sibilant — that stands after a consonant is optionally elided before a homorganic (savarṇa) झर्. It is what simplifies a doubled seam: उद् + स्थानम् becomes उत्त्थानम् after 8.4.61 and cartva put three stops in a row (त्त्थ), and this rule drops the middle त् before its homorganic neighbour, leaving उत्थानम्. Being optional, it accounts for the two spellings a text may show at such a seam.
