Samprasāraṇa is the change by which a root's semivowel — य् व् र् ल् — collapses to its own vowel, इ उ ऋ ऌ. When such a vowel then meets the vowel that stood beside the lost semivowel, this rule keeps the samprasāraṇa vowel alone and drops the other, rather than blending them. So वच् "to speak" vocalizes to उअच्, and here the उ swallows the following अ to give उच्, from which the poem's उक्तम् "spoken" is built; the same folds स्वप् to सुप् in सुप्ताम् "asleep" and प्रच्छ् to पृच्छ् in पृच्छन्ती "asking".
