लघुसिद्धान्तकौमुदी 439 · प्रकरण 12, which opens at लः कर्मणि च भावे चाकर्मकेभ्यः · rule 69 of 179 in it
in construction with माङ्, the augments अट् and आट् do not appear
When a root stands in construction with माङ् — the prohibitive particle मा, "do not" — the augments अट् and आट् (the अ- that the past tenses prefix to the root) do not appear. The prohibition is put in a past-tense form but without the past marker, so मा भूः "do not be" keeps भू bare where an ordinary aorist would prefix the augment and read अभूः. The derivation names this rule on the silent step where the augment is held back. The rule is a बहिरङ्ग exception the abridgement gives for the माङ् construction; the corpus reaches it in the poem's prohibitions.
