When a ढ् or a र् is elided, a preceding short अण् vowel (अ इ उ) is lengthened to make up for the loss. So पुनर् + रमते, once the first र् drops before the second, gives पुना रमते; हरिर् + रम्यः → हरी रम्यः; शम्भुर् + राजते → शम्भू राजते. It is a compensatory lengthening — the vowel grows long to hold the weight the dropped consonant leaves behind.
