Before a छ्, a preceding short vowel gets the augment तुक् — an inserted त् — which then becomes च् (by श्चुत्व) and yields the doubled छ् heard at the seam: शिव + छाया → शिवच्छाया "Śiva's shade", आ + छादयति → आच्छादयति "covers over". It is the vowel-side counterpart of शश्छोऽटि (8.4.63), which doubles छ् after a stop; between them, almost every छ् inside a word or at a word-seam comes out doubled.
