the vowel of the reduplicate becomes short

The vowel of the reduplicate (अभ्यास, the copied first piece of a doubled root) is made short (ह्रस्व). A long vowel in the copy is shortened so the reduplicate stays light. धा "to hold", doubled and trimmed to दधा, has its first आ shortened to दध on the way to दध्यौ "he held"; या "to ask" gives य in यया for ययाचे. Together with 7.4.60 हलादिः शेषः it fixes the shape of a reduplicate as one short syllable.
