in the reduplicate, an aspirated stop loses its aspiration

A झल् consonant (a stop or sibilant) in the reduplicate (अभ्यास) is replaced by its चर् or जश् counterpart — that is, it loses its aspiration, an aspirate giving the matching plain consonant of the same voicing. So the reduplicate of धा "to hold", दधा, has its copied ध turned to द: दध, on the way to दध्यौ "he held" and दधानः "holding"; हृ "to carry" gives जह्रे with its copy unaspirated. This keeps a reduplicate free of aspiration, however aspirated the root's own first consonant is.
