a vowel-final stem takes vṛddhi before an affix marked ञ् or ण्

A stem ending in a vowel (अच्) takes vṛddhi — its final vowel goes to the strongest grade, आ, ऐ or औ — before an affix that carries the marker ञ् or ण् (a ñit or ṇit affix). So the perfect ending णल्, which is ṇit, raises कृ to चकार "he did", and the kṛt and taddhita affixes tagged the same way lift a stem in the same way (सखि → सखायौ). It is the principal rule that strengthens a vowel-final stem to vṛddhi.
