An अ standing in the penult (उपधा, the second-to-last sound) of a stem takes वृद्धि — its longest grade, आ — when the affix that follows is marked ञित् or णित्. The causative affix णिच् is णित्, so a causative made from an अ-rooted verb shows this lengthening. So पट् in the tenth class reaches उत्पाट्य "having torn up" — पट् + इ → पाट् + इ; सद् "to sit" causative gives आसाद्य "having reached" through सद् + इ → साद् + इ; शम् gives शमयितुम्.
